They said it's because they didn't want to have to try and balance it so the predators wouldn't eat all the herbivores and starve to death.

Yeah the 2 things that annoy me most about Far Cry 2:

1. Instant re-spawning checkpoints. If you blast them, IMHO they should be rebuilt on a flexible sort of timescale, depending on variables such as who is manning it and how far they are away from their core support, how much damage you have done to it e.t.c Perhaps even after you kill it enough in a short amount of time, the checkpoints will just be abandoned or something...or if YOU'RE supporting a faction, they'll move up and take it or something...

I've had a little fun leaving IED's in a destroyed checkpoint, moving on and doing my mission, then stopping short on the way back and detonating the explosives...

2. Did I mention re-spawning checkpoints?

3. Being shot at by EVERYONE as you drive around. It would be much more realistic if checkpoints simply asked you to stop and depending on your rep and who is manning the checkpoint, they may let you go on, ask for a bribe, open fire or offer you a beer.
Unless of course you just run the checkpoint.

Ok, I'm confused. My map pointer points towards the weapon dealer, but he's not there. There is also the bar, but I can't open any of its doors. What now? Go take a mission with Level 5 malaria?

I've only been playing an hour or so, but...

1. The Jackal commits the "he's a too pathetic enemy to kill" idiocy. Instead of killing you when he learned that you are his assassin, he gives you a gun and one of those big-ass whooping knives (which aren't big enough, judging by their range I tried to cut the foliage with). I know he thinks you are not a risk anymore, but

2. The malaria is VERY, VERY plot convenient. I know that some shitholes are practically swimming in the thing, but Jesus, according to my journal, I've only arrived by an hour.

3. Why do safe houses have signs pointing towards them with the words "safe house". That doesn't make them very safe, now does it?

Also, I'm looking over the forums and as EVERYONE is whining like they have a purpose. Jesus, I thought Dark Messiah was bad.

hahahaha, they don't mind re spawning guard points but this of all things can't be managed by the same method.

That must've been a joke, because there's also no eating mechanism in the game, so why should the predators suddenly have to.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The Jackal doesn't think you're not worth killing; he thinks he understands you, and he thinks he's going to teach you. Play more of the game. He's also openly batshit insane, so what do you want? Turns out when you get sent to fix something in an African shithole everything is not as simple as it seems? OMG.

No, I think they're just idiots. I mean, how fucking easy would it be to have the AI constantly keep a distance between animals as they move around? Jesus, make the Zebras 1m/s faster than lions and you've got a few lions wandering around and no respawn problem.

I mean, the animals respawn ANYWAY; they don't even EXIST until it creates them near you. They just didn't consider it important, and frankly I don't blame them. It's not a jungle survival simulator. We don't need a Robinson's Requiem-esque medical kit either.

These checkpoints really piss me off. I mean isn't the whole point of a checkpoint in a third world country to scare the locals out of a little cash/valuables? As soon as I get within 600 meters they start lighting me up.

In some parts of the map they're easy to avoid, but often there's nothing to do but shoot them up, which means a pointless 5-minute fight every crossroad. I'm annoyed more by the random sedan-murderers; every time you hop out of your car to shoot someone, there's a non-zero chance you'll die.

It's funny really, because this stuff doesn't bother me THAT much (although I'm unlikely to finish the game). I like the ambience, I like the weapons, and I like the tactical possiblities. I can put up with the consoley-ness. Fuck CLEARING the shanty town; my MGL flattened the place and I got the foozle.

As long as the game doesn't pull any more of that "CLUMSY PLOT TWIST" bullshit again it will pull through for me. The developers have stated they intend to address gaurd post respawn times in the first patch of the game... though that doesn't exonerate them from releasing yet another Beta product. Who doesn't do that these days? :)

It can pull its fair share of stupids but it's largely saved by the fact that it's the most "tactically open" game we've played since Flashpoint. At least the Jackal is cool. He's probably the only guy in the game with any real character. He's fucking crazy, but not a stupid over-top crazy.

It's even characterful craziness; I've got nearly a dozen Jackal tapes, and he's a deeply, deeply disturbed man driven into a bad place by the hypocrisy of the West and the brutality of Africa.

I'm sure there's a market for games where if you slip down a slope and break your leg you have to dose up on painkillers and try to perform complex surgery before you pass out, get infected, are forced to amputate the leg, gouge your eye out and run around on uppers for the rest of the game.

I'm just saying it's not a BIG market. :)

Just cause I hate myself I perused the official forums for a bit. Because I hate all of you I felt the need to post this little comment;

" think Key Bindings are the least of the customers worries and concerns... How about a realistic game... how about delivering what was promised? How about just making a game thats worth $50. If this game had a demo, there would have been 99% less sales... End of story."

Sadly nobody has said the camping is too short yet.

Heavy syrettes too heavy? Bullets too fast, rhinos too slow?

It simply boggles the mind the amount of hate directed at this game. Sure, it's no simulation. Sure, it's not perfect (unsurprising since nothing is). But it's got scope, and ambience, and it's fun for a hell of a lot longer than most recent games. For the decent weapon balance alone it's worth playing. :)

The Ubi forums are fucking sad. I did a little bit of examining there when the game was released and found most of the whingers are old Crysis fanhards (IE: You'll notice many of them say things "like in crysis" or "was done better in crysis.) or ironically, old No Submarine's Allowed, Silent Hunter fanboys STILL holding some freakish grudge against Ubisoft. (Saying things like "I'll never buy another Ubi game again" or "Boycott Ubisoft", the same exact things that were being said when SH4 was released.)

Am I one of the unique individuals who loves both Crysis and Far Cry 2?

Shit, I can compare and contrast both, and I could list a half dozen things off the top of my head that could be implemented in one game from the other or just improved.

But they're both still great games.

(I must admit the respawning guard posts does wear a bit thin and I didn't get quite that annoyed at anything in Crysis)

Did anyone choose to help the refugee types instead of the mercs? I kind of liked Michele and Singh. I even felt bad when Marty died because I made a mistake and apparently forced him to OD on morphine (on an unrelated mission).

I did. It makes no difference; the guys go missing anyway. I foolishly believed four kitted-out professional mercs could escape from the two enemy soldiers I didn't snipe, but lol scripted. :)

I'd ask what happened to the refugees, but I really don't care. They only gave me their malaria meds, after all. Paradoxically, I only liked Michele because her missions tried to make a difference for the people. It seemed characterful on some level.

Nothing; it appears to have made zero difference to the game. It's just you get script-killed in the church instead. Nobody ever says 'wow you a big man saving those people' etc. Maybe it changes the end, but who cares?

I had a lot of fun in the bar because I knew it was going to happen. SPAS12, M79 and a flamethrower = all fun all the time. :D

I hope the game gives us enough diamonds to actually buy everything available in the gun shop. I've found every diamond case, done every assassination and every faction mission in the north and I can't afford everything I can get now.

I've got pretty much everything good except the gustav (I bought the MGL instead) and I'm only ~70% through the game. Depending on how many cell missions there are there could be heaps of money left lying out there. I've been having fun with flare pistol + MGL + SAW lately, although I'm thinking of changing to PK since the SAW's reliability is horrible (you can carry 400 rounds, and after that much it will start jamming, ie it sucks).

It's a real shame that the 'crappy gun management' isn't such an issue outside the very start of the game - I enjoyed counting my shots on good weapons, ditching it for an AK then going back to recover it on the way out, and having it explode in my hands. The AS50 and the MGL you get early on lasted me a long, long time... although the MGL 'jam fix' animation being 'rip the shit out of the cylinder' is pretty funny.

I like the Jackal as a villain. I think he works really well; shit, he even talks slightly too fast. It's clear he's at least mildly unhinged. It's just economics. :)
