I forgot where but I think either Paramount slipped up or is intentionally being deceptive but they mentioned that Cumberbatch is Kahn.

Maaan look at all that bodly going where no one has gone before.... London. I am loving how they are absolutely stonewalling on if Cumberbach is Khan or not. I suspect he is not but I don't know if there is going to be a collective sigh of relief from fans or an explosion of nerd rage. Still looks like it's gonna be a fun little movie.

Stunts are both visually exciting and place out heroes in tangible danger. Even if they don't make sense.

I mean people still whine like dogs about OH NOEZ TOO MUCH EARTH so ...

I know, it just seems like they are over doing it given what I have seen in this movie so far and the last movie. There is so much falling and hanging from cliffs, platforms, ropes skydiving... too much.

Dude the bit in the trailer looks almost exactly the same as the bit in the first movie. That's worth being concerned about. :V

Sometimes it's nice in fiction to see the same tactics used twice. "God, do you remember last time we were in this spot of trouble?" "Yeah, wish I could remember how we got out of it."

Or is the Starfleet Academy curriculum four years of IMPROVISE IMPROVISE IMPROVISE

I am excited to see this film. I might even go see it with Hav.

I've seen people bitch about this before in comments and such. Does it really matter if the villain reveal takes place on Earth? I mean it's looking like 90% of the movie is going to take place on other worlds, so it seems to me like it's keeping the ST theme of showing the unknown.

Yeah that is a great and fun tool for something with a long history, but when it's like next week? It's just monotonous.

After a certain point, you start zoning out while Kirk is leaping across one thing or scrambling to hold on to something else and start thinking

In practical terms, no. I'll be in L.A. on May 17th. SO COMPARATIVELY CLOSE.

I guess if 5-6 hours is comparatively close.

Well if you wanna make the drive one day I have moderately comfortable couches to crash on. Or we can just stay up all night drinking and doing women and looking at drugs. :D

Okay, I read that and I think it primarily only spoils the opening action scene and some of the set up for the rest of the movie. It actually improved my outlook towards the movie which had been going south after the trailers and all the nonsense about who Cumberbatch's character is.

Suuuure, because it's not as if the very first episode of Star Trek ever to be produced had a scantily clad dancing slavegirl... oh, wait...

Never said it didn't (would be a strawman, no?). I was commenting on that particular preview image for the trailer.

The best part in the trailer was when the Millennium Falcon just about made it through that gap. And Sherlock.

Actually, I don't disagree that the way it's used in the trailer (with zero context beyond "here's Alice Eve in her undies") is pretty shameless exploitation of a scene that I'd be surprised lasted more than 15 seconds - though I will point out that the production teams on films usually have very little say in what appears in trailers, something which has been true even back when they put the destruction of the E-Nil in the trailer for Search for Spock against Harve Bennett's express wishes. I've just heard it claimed way too many times that sex and sexuality have no place in Star Trek, which is such a ludicrous concept that I trust I don't have to explain why exactly it's ridiculous.

It's clearly going with the high octane, sexy, fast paced, "Here's a guy you may know!" thing to draw in the crowds. It is, after all, a big budget action franchise now (though it could be argued that all the TOS films after TMP were anyway).

I'm hoping that the trailer isn't showing even a fraction of what the film is really like, although I loved the second trailer to the first film and have seen the first ten minutes of this when it was shown before The Hobbit.

But yes, the idea that action and sex are alien (pardon the pun), is something laughable. Roddenberry knew he wasn't going to get audiences without that kind of thing in the series even, to say nothing of the films. Which is why the TNG formula works well for a TV drama, but not a big budget film except for FC, of course.

Clearly Alice Eve wants Kirk to rub decontamination gel on her, a-la ENT.

That said, looks like Peter Weller gets to play an Admiral, we get another factoid about John Harrison as one of Starfleet's "Top Agents" (trying to figure out anyone from TOS who could qualify as an "agent"), and the Abramsprise dwarfs Alcatraz Island (that's what it looked like got smashed on the way down). Meanwhile, this film will probably have more explosions than any prior Trek film from the looks of things.

I wonder....does "John Harrison" have/i] to be someone from TOS? Indeed, I'm almost hoping it's someone completely new, avoids re-treading old ground. At least it's fairly certain from this that he isn't Khan.

My guess is that Harrison is a descendant of the Genetic Supermen led by Khan. Or may in fact have been genetically engineered by Starfleet.
