Now if that is not an awful name, I don't know what is. (the only explanation either of us can come up with is that her parents were late hippy era types, on something, and had an obcession with the space program)

And yes, that was her legal name, and she was not old enough to change it.

First of all I went to High School with Gadrieal, and Merlin (Guess who their parent's loved), their both computer nerds too.

I also went to school with Ocean Rayne, the Music Teacher's twin's Claire and Annette (clairante groan), The aforementioned Lucifer, my stepbrother who was named after a reptile, and many others...

I'm named after the hero of The Terminator(I'm male, so its not Sarah)

As to wierd names, here's the worst I've heard of. A former roomie told me this so I can't swear it's true, but I believed it. He claimed to have known a girl who had her name legally changed to "Commander Data."

Wouldn't that be worse? Now, they've picked a name just screaming to be ridiculed because someone famous gave their kid that name.

And, why do people change their names to something stupid, like that girl that changed her name to "GoVeg.com". Do they think they're making a point?

Moon is not that bad a name for a girl.... Moon Unit, on the other hand....

As for other musicians giving their daughters weird name - isn't Grace Slick's daughter named China?? First time I heard that I thought: "China Slick?? What the heck of a name is that?"

Claire and Annette are perfectly normal names. At least that's what they seem to me.

I know. I was just explaining to Hyperion the most likely reason why they named her that, since he and his friend couldn't figure out why.

Mainly because the Government thinks that it's none of their business what people name their children. I find it weird to even consider the idea that a some government official has the power to tell me what I can and can't name my child, because that is getting far too invasive of my privacy and my rights as a citizen.
And if anyone even suggested that the government do such a thing, you'd have the biggest "freedom of speech" and "Right to privacy" fight on your hands that you'd ever seen.

- iirc, it's Germany that has laws regarding the naming of children, or rather, something along the lines that you can't name your kids anything stupid.

- I used to work in the paramedical side of the insurance industry and I saw a large number of names go by in the course of my daily duties. There were some strange names, but the one that was the all-time winner was: (drum roll please).....Cinnamon Butters!! I wish I was making that up. (heh, that name still makes me laugh.)

Really? In Denmark it's almost considered natural that there are laws about which names you can give your children. (I'm not too sure about this - but some priests are reluctant to baptize children in strange or potentially humiliating names)

However, I agree with you that it might be too much with a list of approved names.

I was trying to find the thread where I listed various names I'd happened across during my work, but I can't find it now.

On the subject of names: Am I alone in believing the male gender gets shafted when it comes to interesting, catchy or really good names?? Most of my favourite first names happen to be female, and there's very few male names I don't find boring.

One of the "funboys" at my work has been tagged with the "muffin" nickname. We've actually trained him to respond to the "muffin" name.

One of my highschool teacher's surname was "Bedwell", which is great if you're a guy like he was. Unfortunately things didn't work out too great for his sisters at times.
