Actually, there is an effective counter for the sword at short-range - the double needler. You can't fucking see your target, and at close range the double needler kills you in like two seconds.

The Prophet of Regret's arrival at Earth is nothing to do with their holy war against Humanity. They've always known what was here and what they wanted it for. They didn't know we were here, and probably certainly don't know we grew up here.

I don't know, but based on what I know now, I'm guessing Forerunner artifacts.

No. I can lay down that smackdown again any time, but this isn't the thread for it.

Judging by what the Covenant were gunning for in The Fall of Reach, I'd say that there's a fair chance that some museum in Mombasa had a gemstone with the Delta Halo's coordinates, like the first one. Especially since the Covenant didn't know where it was until the Prophet of Regret's ship (along with the In Amber Clad and a fairly big sized chunk of Mombasa) arrived.

I dont think so. If they knew there were going to be humans on Earth they would have brought a bigger fleet.

It can...but for me usually I can kill or get a lot faster using the sword.

That and it almost the odd trade off and overall only good for some.

Though as for the ending...eh. It's like Part 2 in a 3 parter.

Based on the ilovebees.com site, they covenant came to Earth because of an AI named Durga. She was on a ship, the Apocalypso, which was bringing back a Forerunner artifact and the covies of course wanted it, so they sent a computer virus to infect Durga which caused a bunch of stuff to happen, but the important thing from this is that eventually Durga re-encounters the artifact and the covie virus tells them to come and pick it up. So they probably knew humans were there, but I don't think they knew that this was our homeworld, they were probably expecting some secret research base, like Reach maybe.

No really, SP campaign ending to be discussed:

At the end of the game, all the Halos are in standby mode, which apparently happens if one is activated and aborted, they are waiting for a remote detonation signal coming from something called 'The Ark'. The Prophet of Truth leaves High Charity on a Forerunner ship, ostensibly to go to the Ark and fire the Halo network (the Prophets have turned the Covenant into a suicide cult based around the Halo network, conveniently not telling anyone the real reason the forerunners created it wasn't to lead others to apotheosis but to exterminate potential Flood hosts, That news spreading and the replacement of the honour guard with Brutes has caused a schism in the Covenant, the Elites aren't happy, and there's a major civil war going on in their fleet by the end.). Truth makes his FTL jump, emerging at Earth.

The Ark is here. They knew that all along where Earth was, just not that it was our homeworld, or, in fact, human inhabited at all. The Prophet of Regret jumped the gun trying to come to earth and activate the Halo network from the Ark. It's not just Halo co-ordinates they're after, it's the Forerunner motherlode.

(on an unrelated note, but which will inevitably lead to some major upheavals in H3, High Charity is infested by the Flood, and the Gravemind is there, it's jump capable, albeit surrounded by a distracted Covenant fleet. Cortana is still in the network there.)

That is debateable, I got the impression that High Charity was only jump capable because of the Forerunner ship.

The forerunner ship was it's power source, not it's jump engine.

It may require a new power source before it can jump, but, well, there's a whole Halo out there, and the Gravemind has been there a long time to find out what's what.

Who knows what they're going to be after Cortana's finished with them

(the Gravemind started out on Installation 05, it moved.)

Both. Somehow, it moved from the Delta Halo to High Charity.

Cortana is the one in trouble. She's stuck in there with Gravemind, isn't she?

That's what I said. They were surprised to find us on Earth because they didn't know it was our homeworld. On the other hand we knew they were gunning for our homeworld and that's why we weren't surprised when they found it eventually (we just didn't know at the time that they had literally stumbled onto it by accident).

There is a persistent rumor that the final level will be released by Bungie in the near future and it will be an X-Box Live download. This being done as a slick marketing campaign to increase X-Box Live subscriptions.

I also here that there is no reason why Bungie couldn't release more levels in the future as addons.

Sure, they did it with Splinter Cell. The first game had a bonus level that was made available from X-Box Live (which also made its way to the PS2 and GC versions of the game, but not PC...grr.), and Pandora Tomorrow had a similar deal where you could pay $5 and get two new multiplayer maps.

Chances are good that additional Mulitplayer maps will be made available, as might additional single player levels.
