I vote spears. Though axes are arguably more dwarfy, killing elephants is more important right now.
Also, I'm totally the leader of the wrestling team! Fuck yes. You should send us out to fucking wrestle that motherfucking elephant.
And by us, I mean the rest of the squad. I'm too important to be killed. On the off chance we win, I should get the glory, of course.

Er, bad idea. Just for lulz, I savescummed and loaded the game and send both the Wrestling Squad and the Crossbow Squad out.
100% casualties.
However, Stark did manage to smash 3 crossbows into the Zombie's Heart and both Lungs. I don't know if that would kill it (can Zombies bleed to death? The wiki does not say).
But still, 7 casualties is not worth a few pieces of bronze gear.

I prefer Maces versus the rabble, as they have an excellent chance of crushing a limb and sending the monster either back into the Chasm that it came from, into a wall to do extra damage, or smashing it back deeper into the enemy lines so we can focus on something deadlier.
Bashing things AWAY is also great for the crossbowmen, as we can assign heavily armored macemen to the front to smash people around while the crossbowmen fire from behind. It works well in a corridor chokepoint. Plus, as they are high-damage weapons that do not do massive internal injuries, you can train people up on them safely without risking limb loss as much, which means that generally I have my draftees using them to train.
I always turn my first Woodcutter into an axedwarf though, as I start off the game with my woodcutter/axedwarf having a tiny level in axedwarf and hunting to make him into a roving murder-machine. Assuming the local enemies are not too violent, by the time he's not needed for woodcutting he'll be tough enough to clean house.
However, to kill elephants, I vote spears. Spears are the best things for gutting larger beasties, by far. We can, in a pinch, send in some legendary miners to beat on things. Consider assigning them armor and using them as pick-wielding organ-grinders in a pinch! But I think it makes sense to practice avoidance with large beasties, train a few spearmen, but mostly have macemen and a few marksdwarfs. That's my opinion. Axes are great, but I like flinging enemies around and killing them instantly off a ricochet.

Wow, I didn't realise that "peaceful" is the dwarven word for "get assraped without lube by unicorn hordes".

It would be better termed as "Enchanted", since that's a 'good + magical' zone, which also includes the ever-violent Unicorn.

We probably lost because of the Marksdwarves. Crossbows are still bows, and everyone knows that bows are for elves.
I really want to see those screenshots, though.
Quick question, are spears and internal damage effective against the undead? A quick perusal of the wiki implies that they aren't. If that's the case, we might want to go with a different weapon type.

I'd say half swords, half spears, but all spears is good too.

Spears and keep the crossbows. Steel gear for elites/bronze for norms. Plate for Melee, chain for bows.

Spears and axes for the real military.
Should you ever have to conscript the entire fortress to go down in a blaze of glory, obsidian short swords, if you've got the wood for it.
EDIT: Oh, and I sign up for the next immigrant wave.

I like that mace idea. It seems like a proven tactic. But spears and swords work, especially since those swords will take up less ever valuable steel and bronze. It depends on how well the metal supplies are holding up.
I almost wish my guy's job was a little more risky, so he could do something funny that most likely would result in his death. But make the Palelabor fortress better is good, too.

On the plus side if and when MRDOD finally encounters the horror that is THE PITS there should be lots of amusing death stories
Though it's kinda surprising that there haven't been any river, cavern or lava monsters yet.

Personally, my dwarven side wishes for axes and the hewing of limbs. However, my SPARTAAAAAN side demands no armour and bronze spears. From a sheer asskcikery point of view, I would suggest steel for all frontline troops, fully equipped with plate mail. Spears are clearly the best for killing our more powerful foes, however.
And as a mason, I yearn for hammers crushing the skulls of our enemies. I would suggest that we take spears.

Remember, a vote for cockroach-engraved spears is a vote for Palelabour and our troops. You do support our troops, don't you?

It was an axe. Axes make good weapons. Maces and hammers are my favorite because they are also extremely cheap, but you can definately create a handful of trained axemen since you get an axe with every woodsman migrant that shows up.

Awesome. Cruel and unusual punishment for all! For Palelabor!

Obsidian swords.
Worry about steel weapons after our warriors are clad in plate.

Interesting and entertaining read so far. Keep up the good work and I would like to join the ranks of Palelabor if possible.
As for the weapon question, I'll cast my vote for both spears and axes.

The heart can't be severed.
However, swords will quite often pierce internal organs. If you lop off enough limbs, it's only a matter of trial and error before you hit the heart or the throat.

I was thinking Aztec dwarves....
does that mean we get to build the fort into the shape of a terraced piramid?

Actually, the next version is planned to have a Z axis, so eventually, yes! Giant terraced pyramid fortress!
