It would be so awesome if the Chinese/Mongols invented single-action revolver pistols first. You'd have hordes of Mongolian Cowboys on horseback doing riding trick-shots while outflanking Romans and Indians and Mussulmen with crank-action gatling guns!

Anyways, if the Roman state never collapses, then what happened to the Germanic tribes? Are they a constant threat across the border, did they Romanize, or were they pushed northeast into Russia to serve as a buffer between them and the Mongols?

In the setting, the Roman empire never lost the legion on the Rhine and had some military successes there. Eventually there was a push North and now most of the Germanic tribes are part of the Empire, though a few pushed out East or North and were subsumed into the Viking and the various tribes of the vast Russian steppes west of the Urals.

That eagle-mouthed pistol the lead Marine is carrying is pretty cool, although I don't know if I'd want anything interfering with the muzzle of my flintlock - they're inaccurate enough as it is.
