Well, your version looks more easily manageable, IMHO.

Well, I'm not sure when we're going to start, but I may be a little short on time until after Christmas, for obvious reasons.

I like your map Darkevil. The SE5 map has too many near-impossible to avoid choke points, yours is much less likely to turn into a game of "you shall not pass!".

If there isn't any objection to that as a map should we start tentatively staking claim to chunks of the map?

[snip image, new tentative map below]

That's my tentative placement so far. (I'm also assuming our space UN is where I put it)

For everyone's information, the Guymelusians are religious zealots who believe that biological beings must transition into synthetic bodies in order to appease a poorly defined pseudo-pantheon they only refer to as The Machine. Unfortunately, since they more or less consider being born a biological creature to be 'sinful', most of the techniques they use to alter themselves generally run the gamut from simply crude, to downright harmful.

I have no real preferrances, other than a territory near the periphery to avoid being ganged up on by a bunch of folks like I could be if I was in the middle. Would half a dozen stars be ok? I could go as few as 3 or 4 if we get a lot of people.

My state will be a fairly democratic and peaceful one, human-dominated but tollerant of aliens, cyborgs, and genetically modified humans. They are a bit touchy about advanced AIs though, and advanced nano-tech is a cause for fear and paranoia due to certain historical events. The government is a strong supporter of space travel and infrastructure for scientific, economic, social, political, and also military purposes. They tend to focus on the fleet at the expense of the ground forces and infrastructure.

At least that's what I'm using now. May change a bit before we start.

Err, is this happening? I haven't done a lot of these before, so maybe slowdowns like this are normal, but it would really suck if this whole idea just died out. :(

Eh, slowdowns happen sometimes, particularly around holidays.

I've made a new map with your (as yet unnamed) civ near the periphery like you asked.

[snip new map below...hmmm, perhaps I should just start uploading separate maps...]

I'm all for Space UN being right where i started drawing the map from.

And yeah this sorta slow down is normal, everything has slowed down cause of Christmas. It'll pick back up again probably in a week or so.

Can I have the 6 points at the far east of the map that looks like the ship from tempest?

Rom, we'll work out some diplomacy once the ideas become more formative, but it looks like your faction will be really easy to get along with.

Okay then...I'm assuming that you meant the stars that look like a boat right?

Never played tempest I presume. Yes the boat shape to the far east.

By the way, The Boat would be a very good nickname!

Well I prefer role-playing diplomacy (even be it gunboat style) to overt conflict. Also I often play factions fairly close to my real-life political inclinations (at least comparatively). So I'll be easy to get along with unless you play an aggressive, totalitarian dictatorship. :D

I look forward to working out some arrangements. :)

With relatively few stars, may I suggest that Node Travel takes time? Either it takes a week to actually transit a node, or it takes a week to regenerate the FTL Node Drive, or that Node Travel isn't instantaneous and moving through the space takes time.

Otherwise, we'll have some crazy stuff happening with how fast ships can redeploy...

Or we could have ships even slower in their STL system transit between nodes, there is that option as well. And hey we've got ninety ish stars on that map i think.

Well, we figured some time for STL transit right? Doesn't getting to the outer planets take a few hours even at light speed? This was why nodes were put on the edges of the system wasn't it? I suppose if we have to, we can lower max STL speed a bit, though to give my personal opinion, I don't think its a big deal.

Trip's over, add me in. I'll be the Star Kingdom of Kaeleer, and location doesn't particularly matter to me.

Count me in monkey children.

6 points in that semi-triangular section to the right of the Space UN

Thus far I still have some unoccupied stars around me. I really hope it stays that way (buffer zones and all :)).

So, shall we start an OOB thread? I'd be happy to do so, if no one objects.

Don't expect my Order of Battle up for a couple of days at least. I'm flying back to Toronto tomorrow.

The most I'll say is that I'm leaning towards a small number of big battleships, with a lot of light cruisers, and that energy weapons will be the primary armaments. Ground forces will lack a lot of heavy weaponry and mostly be geared towards counterterrorism/counterinsurgency urban fighting (yes I know this is a weakness, its deliberate). Other than that I haven't figured out much yet.

Go for it Baerne. I'm still deciding whether to take the Chamarans for a third outing so could someone put me on the map in the meantime, location doesnt matter much to me. Five stars please.
