If I may speak for IP, it's not that he's not a fan of Thrawn per se, but more that he's not a fan of people who think that Thrawn is the second coming.

I enjoy Zahn's work but it is overrated and his attitude is terrible.

Treder is right about Thrawn. A cool EU character, but still a cool EU character--he isn't the all to end all.

What about his attitude? I don't know much about Zahn or what he's said in public. Is he an arsehole, or something? I've tried googling Zahn but haven't come across anything inflammatory.

Oh, and I agree with you and Treder about Thrawn. Particularly in the Duology, where's he's dead but everyone creams themselves on the rumour he's alive. Character wanking can only go so far...

Zahn outright refused to awknowledge prior continuity in Marvel, and refused to cooperate with Tom Vietch, thus shoehorning DE into a post TTT slot which made the galaxy painted by the two series look very different. He insulted Dark Horse comics IIRC and later would, infamously, retcon and manipulate the continuity set down by earlier books in VoTF.

The entire EU, minus the materials derived directly from the films, suffers from a massive failure of imagination. The infamous EU minimalism is a symptom of it, but a bigger symptom is the fact that nearly every character is either from the movies, indistinguishable from the characters from the movies, or not worth remembering, the exception being Grand Admiral Thrawn, which is why I believe explains his vast popularity among Star Wars fans. Nearly ever place was mentioned in the movies, if only in passing. Nearly every plot is a rehash of the original trilogy in one way or another. And when the EU isn't being a poor copy of the OT, it's being a poor copy of itself.

Perhaps the writers were intimidated by the scope of Star Wars and stayed somewhere safe. Maybe Lucasbooks was afraid fans didn't want anything new. Maybe the writers were all worthless hacks. I don't know. At any rate, the EU took a rich and enormous story universe and gave us book after book of the same people doing the same things in the same places. Then Lucas turns around in the prequel trilogy and gives us the same people doing similar things in mostly the same places, showing that either the rot spread to his once-fertile imagination or it was he who put the EU in a straitjacket to begin with.

An entire galaxy to play with, and we get superweapon wanks, buffoonish villains, and the same tired heroes who we all know are going to save the galaxy again. The failure of the EU is on par with the failure of recent Star Trek, in terms of how much it had to work with and how little worthwhile it actually produced.

Before we continue, could we please confirm, that it was indeed Pellaeon, who gave the order to retreat in HttE (lets ignore other sources for the moment).

Because i took a look into my translated copy last night and on the first pages Pellaeon remembers the events of the battle of Endor.

There it says: "Without the Executor leading the battle ... until the order to retreat came. Pellaeon, who had taken over the command of the Chimera after her captain was killed ... ."

Don´t know about you, but that doesn´t sound as if it was Pellaeon, who gave the order to retreat.

And even IF he was the one to gave the order, all those who are now complaining, that this makes him look like he run with his tail between his legs haven´t offered an explenation, why this order was followed or why it wasn´t canceled by superior officers present at the battle.


About being a Mitthiphile and Thrawn and the Chiss being "ubermensch".

First, i never claimed, that Thrawn is or was an unbeatable kind of superhuman. The man has made enough mistakes to contradict that.

Second, by now there should be no doubt, that i think better of Thrawn, than of the DE-Palpatine. You may ask why. If you compare the assets available to the two imperial leaders and what they achived with them it should be obvious, who was the better one of the two.

As a third, it wasn´t ME, who took the article from Gamer5 apart, picking the pieces, that suited my view in the first place. That was IP. But somehow he failed to comment or simply ignored things like "the Chiss having impressive fleets" or that everything a population of five trillion beings needs has to be imported from other worlds.

This is actually the fourth or fifth time i ask to get the supposed inferiority of the Chiss under the same hat with those quotes from Gamer5 and i´m still waiting for an answer. Should it be so obvious, that it isn´t worth mentioning or is this a sign of arrogant ignorance?

No the dipshit who wrote the book had the bombers in a bay one way away from the engines. The blukheads melted and the Knigt Hammer crashed into Yavin 4, IIRC. After his dumbing down of the Sardukar this is KJA's worst crime against sci-fi.

THe bay being nect to the engines was retarded. And I just realized that it was the gas giant and not the moon it crashed into, not that it makes any difference but I never noticed. By that time in the book I was so pissed off with it that I was no longer paying attention.

Actually, something that big crashing into the moon would likely have destroyed the Academy, so I'd say it makes quite a bit of difference.

I thought I read that they saw it crash but I took that as crashing far away from the academey and not into the gas giant.

Read the books about Han Solo pre-ANH. They're a lot smaller in scope and more fun to read, and the new characters are pretty cool.
