I'm surround by two alliances, had NAPs with them no one wanted me. So I just setup massive defense, each of my 16 colonies have a weapons platform with 300mines and 50 scanners heh, making it as slow and rough on them as possible.
At the same time I'm hitting their fringe worlds with no D or worlds they just took from me. Is there a way to cut off a planet at all? Or can they send reinforcements even if I've taken all linking planets to it?

If they got ships incoming than they can still see that planet even if it isnt bordered to them anymore. Actually, this is common tactic: you can change your eta so when your fighting a losing war you can send ships that take like 48 hours to get there. That way you can still see their planets even if they are deep in enemy territory and therefore you might use hit and run tactics to hit them where it hurts

perhaps
If your another race it wouldnt hurt to team up. He might have good planets to trade. And if it doesnt work out you could always split again

The Space server is reeeeal sloooow right now. Fortunately no immediate action is required on my part -- buildings are being built, and the people are multiplying.
I have 24 planets and no useful neighbours! I have useful planets to trade, and yet no one to trade with. I have to figure that the alliances at the top -- which are composed of 3 or 4 active, successful empires -- are just lucky enough to be in the same neighbourhood. And the active, successful empires in the boonies (like me) are just unlucky, and will ultimately go extinct.
Good thing it's just a game.

meh my neighbour turned out to be inactive I think (if he isn't sleeping really long) and my latest colony (9th) revealed no good habs

I've been lucky so far, I guess, in a few respects. First, lots of greys revealed (I only have eight colonies so far, including my homeworld), and there have been enough with decent hab scores (65%+). I also have quite a few in the 30 to 40% range, so I'm hoping to trade them. Unfortunately, a few of those low-hab worlds also have 90%+ ore concentration.
I know I'm just venting now, but still no useful neighbours.

Well, I'm completely surrounded in Gal 82 with only 8 colonies, and I have someone pawing at one of my planents, so I've decided to devote all of my resources to making my home planet a mother fucking fortress.

Dead. I restarted as Ji in gal 84. I only had 1 planet left anyway... And it was surrounded by enemies...

Losing your homeworld = death, or can you survive on other worlds? I built up way too much defense surrounding my homeworld but they punched hole to linking world and just charging through.
Not much of a defensive game, he just charged me with 13 light cruisers and mowed my 8 heavy destroyer/cruiser fleet and medium weapons platform and mines.

no, any planet will do but no planets = death
As for defence, higher shield techs make stronger planetary shields. High stealth, high sensors make better minefields
and your force was quite comparible to his, maybe your designs just sucked

Well all my ships were a mixed design and I usually added a stealth or scanner slot if there was zero, all my military tech was 6-9, beams being 7 missles 9 since I was Drall. Hull and shields 6. Left default shield and hull from templates opting to upgrade weapons and sensors/stealth.
Only thing I can think of maybe he had Fleet officer or something.
Did notice his designs though, he stacked half the fleet with pure missles with the other half pure beam ships.

giving fleet orders might have given him the edge also

I think I'm quite behind in research and I have no idea how to conduct war effectivly so I expect to fall behind once the action starts

Well, Gal 84 had finally filled up. Of course it doesn't start till 2am.

Well, I'm down to two planets, one lasted 34 hours, the other is at 21 and just lost my last Medium Wep Plat(which had the 2nd highest shield rating in 82) He is left with one fleet at 71% and I'm still plentiful in mines and my untouched sheilds are at 12k. Well, there are 177 players that did worse than me.

Well 41 rounds and not a scratch on my planetary shields, still sitting pretty at almost 13000.

since there is nothing much you can do in that gal except only hoping to survive (slim chance but not impossible), ever considered of joining a new gal with another acount to keep busy?
G85 just started to fill up. It will be a deathmatch galaxy (every1 starts with 5 000 000 of every recources, +50 to all techs and a huge homeworld with lotsa population). So basicly its with a lot more action but its also harder to survive, especially because you have to be active at the first days as you need asap as much greys as you can get to colonise to build as much ships as you can get (as you can only build one ship at a colony at a time)
offtopic: thats that evil bunnyrabit from Monty Pyton right?

For my first (and probably only) try at Space, I managed to survive. I was the second-ranked Turian (#32 overall) in galaxy 83, and our alliance was number 10. Huge drain on my free time, though, and I don't think my marriage would survive another kick at that particular can.
