Son of a monkey fart!
When it uses the local address, the server starts up fine. The instant I put up the actual IP address, the server does nothing. So either it doesn't like our firewall, or the dedicated server is LAN only... The thing won't even give me an error message - it just sits there.

What we need...is a dedicated server.
Now, who do we know that has a dedicatded server, hmmm?
PLayed my first on-line game. Had my ass handed to me, but I still managed to kill 4 people at once, when I noticed a smoking seahawk coming in for a landing, hid behind a trailer, then fired a AT missile into it's cockpit.

So what's the full story on the crap I've heard, concerning players getting better weapons the longer they play?

If I ever become dicator, I will institute the dealth penalty for pussies who spawncamp with tanks and C4. This would despose of most specops, but all the better, since they are pussies in the first place.
BTW, this is a question to HAB members: is it possible for real F35-B aircraft to trail helicopters at speeds slower than those of a dirtbike?

If you play on Ranked servers, you earn points as you play for teamwork/combat skills, which eventually rack up to a promotion. Every few ranks you can 'unlock' one upgraded weapon kit -- M95 for Sniper, Jackhammer for Engineer, and so on. You get your first unlock at lance corporal, I don't know about after that (I'm a Lcpl, no one's higher than corporal yet, USMC ranks).

Probably, in real life Harrier pilots can easily follow a 25+ knot warship through the water while coming in for a vertical landing. But that doesn't involve much turning, and that's the stage of flight in which Harriers are renown for crashing. The F-35 is supposed to be improved safety wise, but in real life they'd never come close to attempting that sort of maneuver. For a fighter speed is life, and if any enemy aircraft were around they wouldn't want to drop under 500+ knots. Course, in real life aircraft can't soak up one or more missile hits like nothing happened.

Nor in real life can a Blackhawlk take a M1A1 round through the cockpit and be just fine.
Except in Battlefield 2!
Don't worry folks BF2 is the engine, its the mods we are waiting for. (And it seems like many if not all of the Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 1942 mods are being ported over within the next few months.)

As an aside, last night on the uclear facility map I took out a Chinese "Hip" helicopter and ended up killing 4 people at once.
The damn thing was smoking like crazy and coming in for a landing at the northeastern port base. I was the only marine handy. Just sat tight behing a trailer until dust started to kick up, rounded the corner and javelined his ass.
It was awesome.
If y'all ever happen to see a PO3Lonestar in your travels, that's me.

BrotherCaptain_Gaius here. I hang around on various official/ranked servers and occasionally poke my head into the CAD/8-bit public server.

Just because I have a BF2 question...
What kit unlock do y'all recommend for the first one? I'm thinking engineer, because the bog-standard shotgun sucks.

I gotta disagree there. The Remington has some insane damage and is reasonably accurate with a fairly tight spread, and the MEC auto shotgun makes up for it with, well, semiauto death.
SpecOps G36C: I hear good things about this one. Theoretically even better than the M4A1.
Sniper M95: I took this one at LCpl. Blah. I don't snipe much, and I can't say I'm very impressed with it. Just too inaccurate and too slow to be of much use, though supposedly it has the power to penetrate vehicle screens/cockpits and kill the driver.
Assault G3: No grenade launcher and a smaller magazine, but it's crazy accurate with a ludicrous amount of stopping power. Hard to go wrong with this one.
Support PKM: I hear good things here too. Worse than the standard SAWs when standing, but prone and it's accurate enough to use the ton of extra power.
Medic L85A1: I've picked it up a few times, and I kind of like it. Has a scope. I'd take it any day over the Chinese AK-47, but in general I prefer the AK-101 and M-16A2.
Engineer Jackhammer: Never really played with it or heard much about it.
AT DAO-12: Overrated, IMO. Some swear by it, but I don't see the attraction. I've gone up against it in CQB and won the majority of the time. It being a shotgun, the standard SMG will also have better medium-range accuracy.

After going to rounds on Gamespot's finest servers, I am reminded as to why I gave up online gaming (for the most part).
Basically:
"WTF. dud, he's cheatin" *teams kill*
Or assclowns that can see where they're going in FUCKING DUNE BUGGIES! and run over teammates at the home base

I'm loving the PKM. More powerful and more accuracy than the SAW, RPK and Chinese POS (when prone). I can actually hit people with it at medium to long range (the other guns seemed to hit everything BUT what I was aiming at).
I think I'll get the G36 next, after I get another 6000 to 7000 more points (I swear the advancement/unlock point requirements need to be rebalanced, badly).

Yawn, one quarter of a way to Lance Corporal. Fucking game needs to stop crashing every 10 minutes. I'm thinking of unlocking the Spec-ops rifle. Anyone else pick it?

Nah... while the huge points break from LCpl to Cpl is a little jarring, DICE had the right idea here. If you think the requirement for corporal are nuts, you should see some of the medal prerequisites. Take the "Aerial Combat Medal," for instance. If I recall correctly, it requires some 500 global total hours flying in a jet, with an uninterrupted kill-streak of 7 or so in any one game in addition to the 5000-odd aerial kills needed before that.
If everyone was a Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps with every medal, ribbon, and expert badge after two or three months, what would be the point?

The point is that unlike the nuts with 30000+ points, I don't have 18 hours a day to invest in a game. I might play three rounds a night, at most, if I have time to play at all, and I'd like to feel that I'm getting somewhere.
EA seems to have gone after the I-have-no-life-no-job-no-educate-and-my-girlfriend-is-my-right-hand crowd at the expense of rewarding everyone else that plays BF2.

Just about this close to lock this one, but it seems like there is some useful life in this thread.

When you unlock something, do you lose the previous weapon?

No. You have the option to switch during the class selection. So, you can switch any time you respawn.
