So question, are we expecting a republic that has a semi-competent government to have a military that can effectively pull off an SEAD mission?

Wait, did the Costas attack BAERNE directly?!

EDIT:

How the hell can that work? The Costas barely have a functioning military. The Baernes, OTOH, are pretty militant SOBs. They don't call it FORTRESS Baerne for no damn reason.

Uh...yes. Their capital, in fact, after Baerne invaded (err...moved into rebel controller territorry to protect the people :P) the Costa.

How can antique half-century old warplanes do that?

There's the fact that some of the warplanes aren't a half century old, and the other ones got upgraded and zero-houred by Tonkin.

And really, I'm expecting the Costas to take fairly hefty losses on average(15% or so), and much heavier amongst those doing the SEAD mission. The point of attacking Baerne is attempt to force Baerne back across the border by removing the will to fight. And of course, there's additional parts to the plan. Like acting in the "best" traditions of dictatorships, and killing off dissidents.

The Baernes are a militant population. They might all go "Duchy of Baerne! Fuck yeah!" like America after 9/11 instead.

The Costa is not a dictatorship. It's got an elected president and all. Now granted El Presidente most of the time doesn't have that much to say about most of his nation, but still, it's a far cry from dictatorship.

Latin American President: see dictator.

Saddam Hussein was an elected president. Got 99% of the vote, last time he was on the ballot.

Just a note: if Baerne is a member of both the FTO and CATO, it's a clear cut case of illegality. They wouldn't even have the veneer of having left the FTO to join CATO. So you might want to rethink your post.

Baerne left. Officially I would think.

Thousands? More like hundreds of thousands to millions are without power and water. Fortress Baerne has millions of people in it, and Costa would be striking the power plants and substations that supply the city. Pretty much the only people that would have power are those with emergency generators.

Erm, Shroom, could you not send an entire battlegroup just to escort one damn hospital ship?

Any deaths of civilians in general, and children in specific, as a result of the attack by Costa on Baerne is strictly incidental. Targets were infrastructural in nature: power plants, etc. Not indiscriminate bombing of the residential parts of the city.

The attack on the rebels and 5th division used gas, but it was only inside Costa territory.

They hit TV and radio stations, too.

Besides, it's not like it matters for propaganda purposes :D

Well, those people manning the power plants and sewage treatment plants are certainly not military personnel. So they're technically civilians.

I'll go edit the "children" out. :)

Technically I'm sending two hospital ships. :P

And I needed to stretch my navy's legs for awhile now. Maybe a short while after they arrive at Fortress Baerne, the battle group can return to the Shroomanian area and leave, say, a couple of destroyers as escort for the hospital ships.

But yeah, this is an expression of outrage also. :D

Yeah, but comm nodes are infrastructure. So TV/radio stations, and telephone exchanges get hit up.

Military targets don't have to be staffed by military to be valid targets. The Costas are obeying the laws of war with respect to foreign powers, at least.

Why don't you send them to be based at NFT? We do have a base to be staffed.

Oh, right. Good idea. No one has sent any ships to our NFT base at Coil Cape? Okay, I'll take up the vacant slots.

Maybe if your Commodore Cain is in the Exarch, he can have a spot of tea with Cornelius Coot!

They may be obeying the laws of war, but it won't matter to people watching pictures of children blasted apart by laser-guided bombs during taping of "Mr. Rodger's Fascinating Dinosaur World" :P

No! Not the dinosaurs! Not Mr. Roger's dinosaurs! You fuckers! You fucking fuckers!

Just because they're valid targets doesn't change the fact that they're civilian. So technically, I'm right that they're still innocent civilians. I guess if you insist that they were valid targets, you'd be technically right too.

Yeah, and I have plans for the Exarch. Time to let the Exarch's weapon systems stretch their legs...
