Yes and no. Comets are fairly regular, (Hailey's comet) but in this case, the object is not a "rock" rock but I call it that for convince. I have no idea if its an advanced probe, the herald of the end times, or the number 42.

You're forgetting, I kicked a icerock into the sun in front of it and followed that ballistic trajectory in. So it would appear I'm either following the comet, or part of it. If you had no idea what it was, it would be fairly reasonable to assume that it was merely part of the comet. Note, I do want people to be able to interact with it, I just want it to be done honestly, and not through a feat of metagaming.

It would help if you read his post carefully, as it is - in fact - just a rock.

See, this guy really deserves a gold star. The ice rock I threw in to follow towards Sol is just a joe average piece Oort debris. The Pod, on the other hand, isn't even an asteroid at all. It's not a rock. So there's either the comet or the pod, and no asteroid.

I'd write a response along the lines of a miner going out to gobble it up, but I'm going to be busy for the next day and a half so I'd rather not involve myself.
Imperial Overlord wrote: Yes, I think I would have spotted him. Mars has very good long range sensor platforms (which I paid points for) and Sol is very well patrolled and developed system which is currently on high alert due to multiple incidents and a high level diplomatic conference. I'm going to hear him out and we'll discuss it. If we can't come to an agreement it will get kicked over to Nitram to make a call because he's not an involved party.
I mean, I suppose if you think thats reasonable than okay. But personally, I think he has done a pretty smart job of setting this up and just going and saying "Oh, I found you!" is pretty lame; even if you do have super-duper radar.

Maybe this is just me, but I would consider sending a military patrol ship to investigate this most non-unusual comet, even during this hightened state of alert, to be metagaming. The guy set up a reasonable senario where he wouldn't get caught. He has a ship cloaked, basically drifting through the solar system behind a comet; it will take days for him to get anywhere.

The only thing out of the ordinary here would be that this isn't a comet anyone has seen before. Do you send battleships out to 'take a peak' and catalouge this most bizzare occurance like they do in star trek? Or do you ignore it like you would any other piece of space debris flying around the solar system on a non-threatining orbit?

But, you are a mod, and you did spend points so all I can offer is my opinion.
Imperial Overlord wrote:What does me being mod have to do with it?
Well... your word is law.

If I wasn't heading out for the weekend, and Red hadn't jumped the gun with his space Africans I'd write up a fun little story about some miner who heads out to gobble up this little comet. Fun would ensue and maybe I'd catch Covenant, maybe I wouldn't. But I think that sort of response is far more reasonable than "UNKNOWN COMET DETECTED ON LONG RANGE SENSORS, SCRAMBLE ALERT FIGHTERS, WE MUST PROTECT OUR HOME FROM ANY CRAZY ALIENS WHO MIGHT BE HIDING IN ITS WAKE!".

Of course, this is only my opinion.

Rocks pass by Sol all the time. It's one of the funny things about living on planets. As the Culture says, they get hit by rocks.

I will simply state I know what's going on, and am making rulings as I'm not directly involved in the situation. So Redleader, the answer is no. That's just silly. You don't waste your fleet's reaction mass chasing down every rock on a non-planar orbit, do you?

Wrong time scale. More like months ahead. Maybe even years, if it's coming from the Oort cloud.

Let's be clear: this is discussing an action involving my nation. My being a mod is irrelevant because I don't make mod rulings about actions involving my nation. Period. Huge conflict of interest.

Thats one of the reasons to have more one mod.

Now I think I have a decent chance of my long range sensor platforms detecting something odd going and then getting my fleet getting involved, depending exactly on how things get retconned, but that's my opinion as player.

For a mod ruling on that we have Nitram.

Like I said to redleader, I'm still baffled as to why everyone is trying to metagame this by detecting out of all the blips in the sky the sudden winking into existance of a relatively tiny object behind a rock near the sun when there's a much more obvious thing to see--

I dropped an array of objects behind the comet, if you read the post. An array is definately non-natural, so no matter what your interest in comets and rocks and such, that should pique your interest. By all means, go investigate, but please read my post and accurately justify things.

Oh, I've noticed the metagaming too - particularly with the Herald incident, only not as pronounced as this one Covenant mentioned.

This is revealing a rather disturbing trend of play here in the STGOD. If you cannot keep OOC knowledge out of IC play, then you should not be playing.

The metagaming with this is quite annoying. It's starting to look like some RP will have to be done via PM, which is a pain for Mods to keep track of, just because people will go 'Oh, I totally notice that despite the million and one precautions'.

As for my ruling. Both Redleader and Imperial will notice the array first, and if they scan after investigating it, will notice that something is sinking into Sol. It can probably be recovered with extensive work, but it's not an easy salvage.

Who do you think is metagaming with regards to the Herald incident? I'd like to think that I have good ingame reasons for doing what I'm doing, but if you disagree, I'd like to know. I already screwed up once with the Nova/Starborn connection.

If you weren't referring to the people who were sticking up for the Heralds, then I apologize for being paranoid.

Sounds perfect. I'll wait for redleader to either retcon his post or somethin' like that, and for someone else to perform their actions, and meanwhile RP with the Golden Sky bunch. Remember, the thing I lobbed into Sol is also Neph's, so it'd be nice to get this hub-bub cleared up fast so she can post a response too.

Actually, my response would have been the same regardless of your reasons. The NGTO is a scary thing, get used to being unpopular.

Poland's reaction to the NTGO is obvious given their history. OoC I also expect the U.S. to side, because the U.S. doesn't like any treaty organization that it doesn't run and you just have to use the word FREEDOM in capital letters to sell anything, and I expected the dwarves to come around eventually, because nothing says dwarf like stoic resistance against the odds, even if you are godless machines. All of this would be easily available through public data channels, and I would assume that internet equivalents exist in all of these close-knit trading partners for the simple efficiency of trading, and that such information would be relatively common knowledge online.

And I am sorry about the confusion and subtle retconning that people have had to do. I was perhaps a might pissy about the whole deal, but it appeared to be a very real possibility that I would be wiped out without the incident even being mentioned in other threads, and without anyone but NTGO members getting to make responses, and I was understandably paranoid, given how much trouble I had getting responses from the main conspiracy.

Oh, and OoC I fully expect my political advantage to totally collapse after this is over. I am killer fundamentalists robots after all.

I have to note that I disagree with Herald metagaming statements, for the same reason as Thirdfain. The premise to go to war is flimsy and has obvious curious holes. Add to that the fact that the Glorious Republic would obviously see the NGTO as a potential military and political threat, and it only makes sense for them to do their best to undermine them where possible.

When is the NGTO even going to respond to our claims? I'm on the edge off my seat waiting...

the UISC revoked its embassy from Earth, and by and large isn't aware of the growing anger aginst the NGTO. RUDI knows, but hes his own little deal.

Has anyone made an IG post to contact specific members fo the NGTO because I havn't gotton any messages.

Only a bunch of shouting on the floor of the Earth coalition floorl...

Spyder, are the Nova mercenaries taking the shaped charges into account with their theory of events on the freighter? Because, unless I'm misunderstanding you, you're saying the damage to the ship was caused by external weapons, which is exactly the opposite of what my engineers found.

Absolutely wrong. The Polish Republic made a huge general transmission. Every newsnet in the Sphere will have heard about it by now.

Why do people keep calling it the Earth Coalition? The majority of nations in the CoN at this moment are non Earth based.

-edit- Actually, the vast majority are not Earth based. A quick once-over showed only 3 Terrestrial powers signed up, with 4 non-terrestrial. And that's counting the Logosians as Earthers.
