Hmm now that I see how utterly massive that capship is, those wings could even be turned into servicing bays for the other ones. Could be a neat thing for long distance missions, bring the utterly massive capship along to have a totally self sufficient fleet.

Absolutely, that way everyone else's capital ships will be way better armed and protected than yours! Who needs independent support vessels when you can cripple your largest ships with these facilities??

I'm looking for a reason to have the capship in the first place. Clearly in this case it's not for superior firepower because all the guns on it are either the same as the other ships or could easily be mounted on the other ships. Currently there is no reason to have a capship in the universe of this fleet and a large service/support ship could be a reason, especially if their FTL capacity is limited in some way and getting places takes a long time.

Now as for whether a large ship with a massive hanger is better at servicing things than smaller repair ships, you could be right, but there are probably a lot of things you can do more easily inside a hanger.

Having it act as some sort of support ship is daft, given that Grahf envisions it as beign a heavy combat ship.

Also, Grahf, I'm wondering where you got that background from. I think the ships look great textured; all that's left is adding drive tails.

In the limited context I have thought of, the big guy is a very limited production, like maybe 4 total. Its roughly analogue to the role of the Eclipse, minus the superlaser. Its extremely well armed and armored, but its more of a deterrent.

Yay! Let's all fly really close to each other, because we're scared of how big and empty space is!

I really like the designs of the new ships, though I reckon you should start experimenting with the fact that space is tree dimensional, and thus the ships can be at any orientation compared to each other.

Well it definitely doesn't look like a carrier anymore. Maybe the nacelles are engines? That would put it in the 'Fast Battlecruiser' class.

Which is the best way to give nerds heart attacks the best way. As long as things like your firing arcs make sense, the rest of it can be however you want it to be, or however you want to rationalize it.
