Anotehr interesting factoid about the hyaenidae is that they are more closely related to felines than to canines...Gil Hamilton wrote:I do in fact know that. They are their own family, hyaenidae. However, it's hard to talk about how lions deal with pack hunters without mentioning hyenas. Hyenas and canids like wolves and wild dogs fill the same ecological niche.Lord Woodlouse wrote:I don't know if you thought differently or not Gil but it's maybe worth mentioning that a hyena is neither a canine nor a feline, it's it's own group.
...now, back with the victory of dogkind.

Why is it so goddamned hard to get little assholes like you to admit it when you fuck up? Is it pride? What gives you the right to have any pride?

Our cat is intensly loyal. It's the only pet, and it will follow my wife around like a dog and meow at the door if both of us are sitting outside the house. The presence or absence of available food seems to have no effect one way or another. I've had many cats in the past, and this is the only one I've ever noticed with such loyaly. Strange, IMO.

Somebody show me a seeing-eye cat, and I'll be suitably impressed. Until then, I really see no value in people saying how wonderful they think their cats are. You can interpret animal behaviour in many different ways, but the ability to train an animal is a testable proof.

Of its intelligence and learning ability, yes, as well as of its potential utility as a working animal. The question of which animal makes the more suitable pet depends on the people involved and their situations.Darth Wong wrote:Somebody show me a seeing-eye cat, and I'll be suitably impressed. I'm more of a cat person, but sure as hell wouldn't mind having a dog either. The biggest problem is that an apartment in an apartment block building isn't really that suitable for keeping a dog. It wouldn't be fair to the dog to keep it in such a confined space. Not very good for the dog to be alone for 8-10 hours a day either while the people are at work and it has no chance to do anything nice. In this situation, it would be downright irresponsible of me to take a dog. The two cats we do have don't have these problems related to the living quarters and while they don't like it when we're both at work, it's not the same kind of stress for them as it would be for a dog. So for me a cat is a more suitable pet, even if dogs are superior working animals and more intelligent.

What it comes down to is personal tastes. Anything else is just trying to justify your personal preferences, which you really don't need to anyway, especially not if it involves putting down other peoples choices.
