He's exaggerating. Your enemies will be excommunicated just as, if not more often.
I don't think that's Mike's problem- the problem- and I agree- is that it's absurd to be excommunicated for
defending your cities from siege. Having them potentially sack a city you left slighty less well defended than it should have been and then being excommunicated is really no consolation-you have to take that city back now.
The boiling oil ducts non-functionality must be a bug that will be fixed in a patch- you
can't have Medieval sieges with boiling oil, that's just insane.
That said, the defences on the walls have been somewhat toned down in effectiveness, but they do fire at enemies close to the walls, in my experience. It's still my standard practice to destroy any towers that might be within range of my toops on approach to the gates or holes in the wall- you can lose more than a few men on the way unnecessarily otherwise.
All up, sieges are better in M2TW though- firstly, because the AI is now
huge on siege weapons- I've yet to allow them to get siege weapons within range of my walls, but they fill their armies with them and can cause serious hurt in normal field battles if you're not careful. Second, castles having a second ring of defences is awesome.
That happened in my last field battle against Denmark, who only had one city left- their siege engines bombarded my army at the start and I lost a lot of Yeomen Longbowmen that would've otherwise been fine. Luckily my Hobilars destroyed them before they caused serious casualties.
I've now destroyed:
- Portugal (Assassination of the Royal Family + Conquest of one of their three territories)
- France (Conquest of all their territories but one + Assassination of the Royal Family- the coolest thing about this was that I got 5,000 florins from the heir to the throne when I killed the King, then I killed him too)
- Scotland (Conquest of all their territories)
- Denmark (Conquest of all their territories)
I've attacked Milan because they're an enemy of my ally-through-marriage, the Holy Roman Empire, they only had two territores, Djon and Bern (ie. Switzerland). Bern is about to fall, being under siege by my King's mighty army in what will be the first use of Bombards to destroy city walls in history.
Sicily- who control all the Italian peninsula except the Papal States (Venice is elsewhere, their capital is
Antioch, for god's sake) attacked my city of Marseilles, but they quickly turned and ran when they saw one of my armies coming. They've now given me casus belli to seize the Italian penninsula from them.
I'm still at war with the Eastern Roman Empire, I have no idea when I'm going to deal with them.
I'm somewhat worried about Spain- they took Portugal's turned-Rebel territories after I killed Portugal's last King. Hopefully they'll focus on the Moors, I don't want to deal with them quite yet.
I do however have an Army within striking distance of every border, so I'm quite well defended. I'm building up yet another elite stack in Nottingham, with a view to sending it and a massive fleet of Gun-Holks to the Holy Land to take Jerusalem and deal with the infidels.
I've also gotten a few Knights Hospitaller Chapter Houses, which is quite cool.
All up I'm doing pretty well- my forces are quite advanced, I've got English Knights and Dismounted English Knights, and I'm still in the 13th century.
My world map hasn't been updated- which is a worry. The Mongols are the number one military power, and that can only mean they defeated most of the Russians. I'll have to deal with them eventually.
I have no plans to attack the HRE, unles they attack me first. I want to honour that Alliance.
In other news, the Pope died and my Cardinal got elected to replace him again. Ownage.
EDIT: one thing I still haven't figured into my plans is the Black Plague. When does is strike? It may well send me broke and force me to disband armies. I'll still be in the best position after it's over, due to all my territory and cities, but ...
DOUBLE EDIT: Ah, Wikipedia. 1347-1351. Bugger.
I must say, the 1 turn = 2 years thing is lame, but for unlocking the factions you want to play, it's good. I'll turn the timescale down to the proper 1 turn = 1/2 year after I finish this game.
