Not particularly. Most terrorists around the world (well, the ones who do the dirty work) are pretty young. Most people in the military who do actual fighting are pretty young.

Report--situation still developing

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts -- A campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was shot Thursday night, the campus police chief told WCVB in Boston.

Massachusetts State Police told the station the officer's injuries are life-threatening.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time near Building 32 (Stata), the TV station reported.

MIT alerted the campus to an active shooter at 10:48 p.m., and is warning everyone to stay away from the building.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

The thought immediately comes to mind, since it was young men in those pictures from the Marathon, that the cop in question thought he had found the suspect... (the MIT campus is less than 1 mile from the bombing scene, and, well, young people are strongly correlated with college campuses, and bomb-making skills with science knowledge).

Police dramatically arrested a suspect at gunpoint after multiple shots and explosions were heard heard in the Boston suburb of Watertown this morning - hours after a MIT campus police officer was shot dead late on Thursday night.

Police are urging everyone to stay inside of their homes. The area is considered extremely dangerous.

Law enforcement are reportedly searching for a black 2013 black Mercedes vehicle which a suspect is driving.

Initial reports suggest that one suspect is in custody and a police officer has been injured.

At 10:48 PM on Thursday night, shots were reported fired on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Earlier - Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed an officer was shot dead responding to a report of a disturbance when he was fired upon multiple times.

He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.

State police spokesman Dave Procopio says the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building.

Procopio says authorities are searching for a suspect or suspects. No arrests have been made.


About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school.

The campus website said police were sweeping the campus and urged people to stay indoors.

In a statement issued to the press, law enforcement officials said that no arrests have been made in the shooting and the search for a suspect or suspects is ongoing.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston issued an emergency alert at 10.48 p.m. on Thursday night reporting that shots had been fired putting an officer was down and that a shooter was on the run.

MIT police were investigating the shooting and had issued a campus-wide emergency alert. Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge police said they were assisting in the investigation

It has been reported that a 'Hispanic looking man' took the officer's weapon from him before firing on him.

'At 10:48 PM today gunshots were reported near Building 32 (Stata) which is currently surrounded by responding agencies.

'The area is cordoned off. Please stay clear of area until further notice. Unknown if injuries have occurred.. Although the situation is considered active and extremely dangerous, an investigation is underway.

'Updates will be provided at this site when more information becomes available.'

The injured officer was from MIT Police and was being taken to Mass. General Hospital where he is currently in a critical condition.

The campus newspaper 'The Tech' posted to Twitter, 'Shots fired near 32 Vassar St (Stata Center), police officer down. Please stay inside.'

Massachusetts State Police initially said the officer has suffered ‘life-threatening injuries.’ He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

The District Attorney's office in Boston later confirmed the officer had passed away.

The school is describing the situation as 'active and extremely dangerous.' - and FBI agents have been witnessed at the scene.

Boston has been on edge after two bombs ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injured 183 more.

Reports are from running media commentary also that a cop was killed in another part of the gun battle, possibly by a third suspect, in a T station. News continues to develop chaotically.

Names of the suspects in this event and the Boston Marathon bombing, which are now formally linked by police, have been released:

Sunil Tripathi, an American citizen from a Pakistani immigrant family in Radnor PA who was a Brown University student who disappeared a month ago in Providence, RI, and shortly afterwards an unexploded device was found near the school, who is said to be the suspect in custody;

and Mike Mulugeta, further details unknown, who has so far eluded police.

MSNBC has been speaking with a witness via Skype who has an apartment directly above the street on which one of the apparent suspects had his vehicle parked and that vehicle is being examined by a bomb squad robot. The witness says he saw explosive devices being used by one or both of the suspects.

The FBI released photos this morning showing two men wanted over the deadly bombings: one wearing a black cap at the time of the explosions, and one a white cap.

As police were responding to the shooting, reports emerged of a carjacking involving two men who fired at police with automatic weapons and detonated explosive devices in the suburb of Watertown.

The hard facts straight from the FBI that I heard via WEEI radio is that two brothers from Chechnya shot two cops andthrew explosives out of the car they carjacked. Watertown is a warzone.
