You know, if you'd put those Dreadnoughts up front instead of sending them at me piecemeal after I was storming your gate, you might have done better.

As you noted before we started, Sentinels are the only antiarmor the Guard has before Tier 4, and Sentinels are weak against other vehicles. You should have directed the Dreads to go after my Sentinel instead of sending it careening into the nearest formation of Guardsmen. Of course, I'd have had the Guard force melee with it to tie it up within lascannon range, but you don't need to do my job for me. :P

Also, you were going for an early Take and Hold win. I know that you can't build gun turrets and such around Critical Locations unless you're Eldar (webway gates are cheap like that), but you, like so many other people, overlooked mines. In fact, mines are great on that level in general; had you rushed me, you would have found your Marines blowing up everywhere they stepped between the front gate and the end of the path to my base proper.

Also: Because I can't resist bragging, I do love that coup de grace I applied. Ph34r the 700+ damage of the Earthshaker round.

The problem: I didn't /have/ Dreadnaughts when you attacked. Those popped out after most of my infantry already got killed. My first vehicle was a landspeeder. :P

Edit: Now that I've watched the replay, I saw what I did wrong. When my Commander arrived to reinforce my 3 full tactical squads, I should have pressed forward and cleared the beach. You only had 3 squads and a command squad there... no heavy weapons, just two bunkers.

Tier 1 and 2 Marines suck some unbelievable balls now anyways. If you can manage to survive to Tier 3 though, Assault Terminators are now virtually unstoppable.

I noticed. One squad can stop a baneblade dead in it's tracks.

And yes, I saved the replay. Lemme link you.

Don't mind the awful site. I put a peice of crap there to fufill technicalities with Angelfire, and so I can use the place as a little file-server.

If you hold still. :P Maneuver warfare is your friend.

Is 'maneuveur warfare' what we call 'microing the supertank so nothing gets into melee' now? Technical! :D

Is it just me or does WA emphasise 'tiers' (amusingly, since I usually played Eldar I didn't even NOTICE the tier-balancing lameness before) far too much? Tac Marines are - even relative to DoW - shit, whereas the higher tier stuff is retardedly powerful. It seems weak to me to design a game around appalling/crap/decent/UBERZOR units divided by really long, quite expensive upgrades for the sole purpose of stretching the game. Call me cynical, but that's what it is: Dawn of Rush games would be even shorter if they hadn't put so much work into slowing the tech tree down. Bah.

Yes. Yes it is. I do it with Predators when I play Space Marines; it's frankly how you keep them from getting killed while dealing as much damage as possible.

As IG I find Hellhounds need a bit of micro, since they have trouble with some heavy assault units, and can't fire at targets within a certain range. Shame on RTS developers for not adding such basic features as 'stay away from the man with the melta bomb'.

Yeah, or you can just keep some Guardsmen in front of the Hellhound.

Anybody up for a game?

I've played a few rounds online. And the trend sticks.

Most people you find play with no idea of teamwork, and persue their own objectives.. and blame you for losing, when your own base gets 3v1'ed, without any allied support. Tisk!

One thing. How the hell do people build so fast and yet have sizable forces? I'm not that bad on the economy judging from video replays, yet by the time I have 3 sentinels, an opponent could have three or more predators...

Not to mention the childishness. But then, what could I expect but l33t n1nj@s??

That's why we all played with each other instead of the general server population last spring.

At least it's better than in Warcraft 3, which allows the ability to attack your allies. I had one rat bastard ally let my primary base get overrun, and then destroy my secondary base himself because in his estimation I was a "n00b," even though the most veteran players would be hard pressed to hold off three opposing armies at once without support.

If you're up for another game, we could do a 2v2 against the comp and I'll coach you through.

Edit: Though we'll have to play earlier tonight; I have a 7:30 class tomorrow morning.

How about a game at 11:30 EST, or 8:30 PST? That's 1 hour from the time of this post.

Sure. I'm on CST, so whatever.

Though isn't it still daylight savings time? :P See you in an hour, same room.

Three reasons why three Imperial Guard players are bad news...

Since it came up during a game:

Remember that the Guard have the power of Command & Conquer. Infantry Command bunkers project a good-sized build radius around them, so you can "chain build" to any point on the map with a simple series of bunkers. This has the convenient side-effect of providing a clear, fortified line of retreat too, should you ever need one. Using this method you can fortify critical locations and chokepoints like the Eldar.

Wow. You run at a damned high resolution. (Mine is set at 800x600 due to my crappy graphics card.)

This page is now unreadable! YAY! :)

I was shocked and dismayed to discover that only the Eldar and IG can cheaply extend the build area. It only really comes up in chokepoints or critical locations, but it's wierd: the money you spend on defences is money you're not spending on units, so whats the balance issue? It's not like Warzone 2100 where you can build unlimited range super-turrets.

Build area matters little. All sides have defense-crushing artillery in the form of Fire Prisms, Whirlwinds/Orbital Bomb, Basilisks, Defilers... etc. Those ruin turrets, particularly Prisms and Basilisks.

Infantry COmmands project a control area? Didn't know that, time for some ownage against my flatmate.

And WTF did they do to Chaos Space marines?!? No flamers, no plasma guns, no missle launchers and IIRC you can only have 2 heavy bolters max!

some tips from watching your replay

you spent a lot of your req on building up low-tier infantry units then reinforcing them instead of pushing up your tech tree (particularly with the econ upgrades).

Also, Hellfire Dreads are a lot more useful against mob-based armies like the Orks or Guard. They could have helped you out a lot more than the CC Dreads when Rogue made his push into your base.

On that note, you built several different tactical squads and specialized their upgrades, but when Rogue pushed into your base, you threw the rocket-marines onto the frontlines where their long range is wasted and their long reload could be disrupted, while keeping your flamer marines at the rear where they couldn't do anything.

Personally, I would have skipped the flamer upgrades and gone for either heavy bolters (long ranged, great for leapfrogging squads) or plasma (firable on the move and thus good for assault, does pretty decent damage against lighter vehicles such as Sentinels and Hellhounds).

I also noticed that you fielded a sizable amount of assault marines. Meltabombs would have made them a better investment.

Sorry, but the Chaos in WA are all Khornites. Not even a Chaos Undivided among them.

There are the Tzeench horrors and the sorceror. I really wanted my bloodletters though.

Defiler seems to be the type Nurgle armies use.

Weird...

WHY CAN'T I HAVE MY BLOODLETTERS!?!?!?!
