I haven't played the game for a few days now. Still waiting on the patch which has been promised for this week ... but as we all know it's highly unlikely to be released on a weekend.

Has anybody sucessfully completed a large scale game on a huge map yet without running the game on some NASA computer?

Large map with 8 AI untill almost 1700s. But that is with several restarts.

I've got an AMD 64 3000+ with 1gb ddr400 ram and a 6600gt with 256mb onboard ram. The large amounts of ram help, lots.

Huge map, maximum AI opponents, 3 crashes and the game was still quite easilly playable at the 20th century.

P4 2.4Ghz
6600GT (128MB)
1024MB DDR

Some anoyancies;
  1. The end-game tech & units are rather disappointing.
  2. The world-editor is a fucking POS.
When I get finished playing the vanilla game I plan on looking into modding civ4 a little, it appears to be blindingly easy. I'm thinking that the number of turns needs to be increased (so you spend similar amounts of time in Industrial as you do in say, Classical or Mediveal). A modern artillary unit would be good (once industrial era acutally lasts for some real amount of time). Otherwise I'm pretty happy with things. Modern armor is great, Cavalry is great against it and mech infantry act both as defense and Anti Air, which is nice. March is a little wierd for what is sorta a defensive unit, but it definatly is an incentive to use them (no stopping for a couple turns to heal up is certainly a benefit). Overall I think it's just time spent in each era that needs to be addressed. The turns should slow down to 1 per year much, much sooner.

But anyway, back to my conquests :)

Good news boys and girls - a patch is on its way!
A Note from Firaxis Concerning the Civilization IV Patch
November 16, 2005

Hello everyone!

I've heard from many of you via the Firaxis website Contact Us form (many thanks for all the dxdiag files and savegames) and wanted to say thanks for all the feedback and detailed bug reports that were sent up.

I just wanted to let everyone know that as of Monday afternoon, the patch was sent to 2K for final testing, so barring any problems in QA, we will be releasing it shortly.

Some of the highlights include multiple AI improvements and tweaks, worker behavior tweaks, MANY game play improvements (ex Animal Husbandry reveals horses), promotion tweaks, a softer pillage sound (requested by many, many people), fixed diplomatic exploits (gold for gold, peace treaty exploit), multiplayer tweaks (Hot seat, Lobby, etc.), memory, caching and performance improvements, etc. There were also a number of video card specific fixes.

To those of you having problems, thanks for your patience. Our guys were working around the clock with your detailed feedback to produce this patch. For those of you having no problems, it's only going to get better. =)

Muwahaha, I got real lucky in my current game. I got a couple of free settlers from the goodie huts and have founded virtually every religion in the game. I am pumping out missionaries and whenever I get a Great Prophet, I build his special building.

What does this mean? Money - I can approximate the Infinate City Sprawl :D

I was just playing this and the computer founded a city named TXT_KEY_CITY_NAME_HERAT :? . Rather odd name for a city, no?

I conquered that city last night; it wouldn't let me rename it 'Herat', something about that 'H'...

Is that the game hitting every single city name? I imagine it has a list of city names per nation and when it finshs it....

No, when the game hit's the name limit it adds the Prefix "New". You know your enemy has a lot of cities when you share your border with New New Bejing :)

Just conquer the city and change the name.

Waiting for this patch is a bit of a drag. :(

Question: does anyone find this civ a bit too defence orientated? Most of my wars seem to be waged defending my choakpoint cities and then launching an attack on one or two enemy boarder cities, by which stage both of us have fought to exhaustion.

Yeh, before you get the catapult capturing major cities a major pain in the ass. Many early units have pretty decent bonus' for defending cities, coupled with the defense bonus from culture and walls, if there is one, make taking any bit bigger city, even with a substantial numerical superiority, a bitch.

If you try for Macemen fast, then move to get theo/Vassalage as an agressive you can start producing some very dangerous city attackers...

Patch 1.09 has been released. You can now download it via the in-game updater in the options menu.

If you were experiencing the black terrain bug, this will fix it. However, a few forum posters have noted issues with the patch and, sadly, Huge maps seem to be just as unplayable as before. :(
