They're not having them talk because it was, suppsoed to be, part of a "plan". From what i read the original idea of the marketing campaign was to not even show the robots till the movie came out, let it be a surprise and such. But that obviously fell through as pictures leaked out and such. So i figure this is probably the last scraps of that plan. It's very important the voices and characterization, so they want to hold back for the "surprise". I mean as if we'll be struck by the Oscar caliber acting or something. It's just some attempt to get people interested.

Actually, it was a recommendation from Spielberg to Bay to reveal them gradually as the campaign went on, waiting until the movie came out to just let everything go and show them in all their glory. And that's pretty much exactly what they've been doing.

Ghetto E: And pictures weren't really so much "leaked out" as they were released by the filmmakers and design teams, which was also a bit of a gradual thing.

Well then my internet rumor skillz have failed me. If that's true it's kind of retarded though. The ONLY reason anyone is going to see this movie is to see giant robots turn into trucks and shit and shoot at each other. Hiding that is less effective than showing it, it's the number one rule of a good story--"show dont tell".

Man, "show don't tell" refers to something completely different: it's a writer's term meaning to actually show something happening rather than have characters talk about something happening.

It's not at all applicable.

I guess it's harder to keep them secret like ET and the tripods in previous Spielberg works. Shame, so I guess the voices are the big secret.

Well, Bay had never even seen Transformers and was going to pass this up until Spielberg said "Hey, my kids love this shit. You were BORN TO DIRECT IT. Now do it, FOR YOUR COUNTRY!".

Seems it will turn out decent, unlike Jon Frakes doing Thunderbirds. He, also, didn't see a single episode of the original material before going and doing the project.

So I picked up the novelization of the movie. Fairly typical 'Independance Day' only with some aliens on our side and 'Herby the Love Bug' thrown in. If the book is any indication, this movie is going to have more product placement then 'I, Robot'. Though, I suppose for something made to sell toys, that isn't really out of character.
Writer's Guild 'Ghost in the Machine'/Decepticon 'Devastator'/BOTM 'Space Ape'/Justice League 'The Tick'

It's always the quiet ones.

Bah. Our ultimate weapon is a full-strength army corps.
