Maybe in the movie that will be more clear, but one would think an experienced Starfleet officer would know that if Kirk is a bar-brawling punk in his early-to-mid 20s, there's not much that can be done to whip him into shape. Of course, it's a movie, so he'll be right.
Actually, in reality that happens quite a bit. A lot of youth need direction and something to focus on which gives them motivation.

While waiting for my train I found a new spoiler for ST-11. As I only read it in a magazine about upcoming movies combined with my unwillingness to pay money for it ["You must have ferengi blood runngin through your veins!" *shoots Worf with Blaster*] I can only offer it as rumor. If anyone can confirm this, please do so.
Spoiler
Nero is from a few years, maybe decades after Nemesis. The Romulan Empire is destroyed. Nero sees the Federation and Spock as the ones responsible. He takes a ship with borg technology [apparently they can't do anything Star Trek without them now] to travel through time and change history to undo the damage to the empire.
And apparently they will not release the comic book with the pre-movie background story in Germany...
"Bring your thousands, I have my axe."
"Bring your cannons, I have my armor."
"Bring your mighty... I am my own champion."
Cue Unit-01 ramming half the Lance of Longinus down Adam's head and a bemused Gendo, "Wrong end, son."

There's a Countdown comic thread a few posts down with more details about those spoilers. Keep in mind that while the comic was greenlit by the movie's writers, there's no word yet of its plot is necessarily the only route to the events in the film itself.

Without being contrarian; meh. I think the more I see of it the better it gets but still think all the original chars on the Ent is silly. It's like tiny toons for Star trek. Why have Sulu, Uhura and Scotty at the Origins episode? Smacks of suckage to me
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The creators pulled a fast one and rather than premiering in Sydney, they premiered it in Austin, TX to a crowd expecting to see 10 minutes of it in front of a screened print of TWOK.

I begin to get the sinking feeling that this is going to be a movie about self-actualisation.

Yeah they totally nailed McCoy's character. I mean when I watched TOS I totally thought that McCoy was just this huge pussy and it's totally awesome to see I was right. Man this movie is looking sick, it's going to kick all sorts of ass, brah.

Dude, it's not that different from Star Trek TMP McCoy and his bitching. :P

Besides, I'd cut anyone some slack the first time they're in fucking space.

Butthurt Trekkie is butthurt?

If you'd bothered to phrase that as any sort of coherent criticism, fine, but damnit do you sound like one of those retards who say it isn't Star Trek because of [meaningless detail]. McCoy was always a queen of cynical drama, if you didn't notice that you were watching him with blinkers on.

Jesus, criticize the movie, by all means, but the suicide smiley? You are so totally not overreacting there, U235. I thought you were better than that.

Not to mention in the show as well... "I'm a doctor, not a elevator/doorstop/percussionist" was his crotchety-doctor line in so many episodes.

And McCoy also hated the idea of transporters, even though they almost always worked. (aside from, like, a couple of glitches and I can think of two examples off the top of my head in TOS. Remember, this was before the TNG era where machinery breaking down was a plot hook because the writers were hacks)

I'll be honest, I watched those two scenes that Jon linked to above and liked them.

There's something about McCoy's voice that DeForrest Kelly had that I've never heard anyone do until now. Some sort of breathy gruffness, it's really hard to describe... but this guy NAILED it.

As a funny note, Stardestroyer.net (specifically Mike's Nemesis page) was mentioned on Slashdot.org article about the premiere in the eponymous first post.

So Mike, in case you were wondering about the upsurge of /. traffic...

The original McCoy was a crotchety old bugger with a (justified) fear of transporters.
Yeah they had to force him to transport in TMP.. of course a few scenes before the transporter had just melted two people.
This McCoy seems scared of absolutely everything.

Edit: The actor's performance itself I like. Not spot on, but it shouldn't be anyway.
But the dialogue is questionable. McCoy complains about his job, Kirk being so gung ho and transporters. He shouldn't complain about space being the boogeyman out to get him.

I don't think he's as scared as you might think, I always got the impression McCoy was just a guy who liked to complain about everything. Remember, when shit was going down, the good Bones never had a problem actually USING any technology.

As we all know, when a character is introduced in a feature film he or she will not undergo any sort of "arc" or character change. That's how we know that McCoy will never get over his fear of spaceflight, and Kirk will vanquish Nero by insulting him in a bar and then beating him up.

That echos my thoughts of:

"Because lord knows no bar-brawling punks have ever joined the military and gotten there lives straightened out before..."

Though, I have to admit, watching the trailer, it gives a real Robert Heinlein Starship Troopers vibe to me (book version, not movie).

Besides, this is James T. Kirk. Given how many situations he solved in TOS with his fists, he's not exactly THAT far removed from his roots here.

I would suggest that McCoy is one of those people who was born a crotchety old bugger. Again, keep in mind that that such complains are consistant with the Bones we know later in life.

Really nice hi def version of the bridge scene with Spock, Kirk and Scotty here; http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramoun ... p_720p.mov but I think someone went a bit OTT with the lens flare effect!
