Well it was fun wasting a half-week of my life, rushed to level 20, but got other things to do for the next few weeks. Later.

If anybody wants I can teach them how to get to level 20 in less than 25 hours, when I get back. (type /age to see how long you've played, you might be surprised).

hmmm rather than read through nine pages...

Me and several of my friends, aftering comming down from a Knight Online kick, have decided to start GW in September. So here are some questions...

1. What do you think is the best character in terms of killing ability?

2. Does the game have a crafting system?

3. How many lvls can you have, and what is the average speed it takes to reach a respectible level?

1. not sure, depends.. games pretty well balanced. you suck on your own but a good team can deal serious damage.

2. all crafting is done by NPC's.

3. 20 lvls, start getting decent around level 15, mostly because you start finding the decent weapons and armour around the area where your likely to reach this level.

I'm very new so here is a basic run-down with disclaimers ;-)

Elementalist has the best AoE (area of effect) damage spells. It is therefore the best to kill PvE (players versus enemies). I haven't played necromancer, but they probably come in a close second on PvE. Elementalists also have the most energy, and are called "nukers". With a name like "nuker" obviously they do the most damage in PvE

Mesmers are only good for PvP and you will have difficulty playing a Mesmer PvE unless you use a lot of henchmen (NPC's in every town which you can take along with quests but the xp is lower).

Monks are good for healing (obviously) and have some decent damage with smiting spells.

Warriors are "tanks" that take a lot of damage. They also have cool looking armor.

Rangers are anti-spellcasters in PvP because of the simple fact that they don't need to run up to a spellcaster to attack them, and spellcasters in PvP usually slow down warriors to a crawl and kill them before they can even reach them. PvE, probably much like a warrior (slow progression).

You get a primary and secondary profession. With four character slots, "you can have it all" like the manual says. I eventually want a warrior/monk, mesmer/monk, elementalist/monk, and elementalist/necromancer as my final builds. Secondary professions means you can mix and match to compensate for weaknesses or make strengths even more potent. So a warrior monk is practically unkillable.
2. Does the game have a crafting system?
Crafting so far I see consists of collecting the right materials and putting them together. There is no crafting "skill". Everybody has to "craft", because a lot of the items you get are totally useless and are only good because you can use a salvage kit on it and get raw materials. Everything can be salvaged, with a few exceptions. This is one mistake I made early in the game, like how the fuck can you salvage something called a "fetid carapace", but apparently you can and get some shells off of it.

Real crafting is done by NPC's, who build you armor customized only for you, and customize your weapons for you.
3. How many lvls can you have, and what is the average speed it takes to reach a respectible level?
I bought my cdkey from a friend. He had 350 hours clocked in and two level 20's and one level 17. So I would say it takes 100 hours to get to level 20. However, he probably knew exactly what to do the second and third times around and he skipped a lot of quests. The first time you play the game it may take you between 100 - 200 hours to beat it depending on how many quests you do and how much you fool around.

However, read this. It is possible to do levels 1 - 20 in one day (24 - 30 hours of playing) by having someone help you called "runners". They run you from town to next town, for a fee of course. The idea is that you can run to very late towns and kill high level enemies to level very fast. However I have a level 20 character who can semi-run (you need to be a specific class combination, warrior/monk to run well and he is warrior/elementalist). I went from level 1 - 20 in 25 hours. So in a week and a half after my exams, I would be more than happy to show someone how to do this. If you are like me and don't like the idea of "go to x, kill y or get z" as I found single player quite boring, then do this.

Using that guide, level 1 - 7 in one hour if you know what you're doing, probably 3 hours the first time you do it.

If you don't want to waste a lot of time PvE, read the gamefaq guides to figure out the best way to beat the game and get into PvP as soon as possible with max unlocked skills. I am not going to spend six months playing this game before I get into PvP, so I didn't bother doing many quests as I find them boring unless doing with another player.

1a. Elementarist/Mesmer for pure DPS
1b. Elementarist/Monk for masskilling

2. it has a simple crafting system.

3. 20 - depends on your classcombo and playing style. 30 minutes to 3 hours per level on average.

*sigh*
I surely hope I'll be able to play again in the next days. It is really annoying when Private Life (TM) gets in your way of gaming ;)

I'm looking into getting GW as soon as I can afford it..and as soon as these goddamn summer classes end (next week). Question, though...can your different characters be members of different guilds, or is it one guild membership per account?

All characters in an account are closely tied; the game even forwards tells and listings to alts. So yes, one guild at a time per account.

I'd be into an SDN Guild, so would Pred.

Characters Aarrek Solaris and Terk Benora.

You gotta quit your current guild before it'll let me invite.
