Question: The issue I raised earlier (for Dahak in that case), how does weemadando have three industrial resources in the friggin' Maldives of all places? I understand that we're makin the area more resource rich than real life, and that's great, but come on, when was the last time there was something valuable in a tiny bunch of god-forsaken islands?

Would it be too much to ask that he take the vacant Indian coast?

I made a change to the rules for buying troops- instead of having 1 point net you 20 men, 1 point nets 200. The previous system made a single regiment of 1000 well equipped men cost as much as an entire battleship. Silly, indeed!
Feels a bit smallish, but it might be because I can't get out of the European war mindset and into colonial war mindset. The War of the Pacific, between Chile and Bolivia+Peru sported armies in the high thousands. Chile deployed around 20,000 men (maybe a bit more) based on the figures of individual armies. Pablo's army is 80,000, so I guess 200 men per point is okay.

Real Estado da India
"The Royal State of India"
"Portuguese India"

Head of State: Marie Ana Wadiyar de Braganca of Portugal and Mysore
Head of Government: Joaquim Mouzinho de Albuquerque

History

The Great War and the British Usurpations lead to a massive exodus of British back to the home islands- at first, to fight for their mother country, and later, in support of Victoria's desperate bid to retake the throne. The Third Mutiny was hardly a surprise, considering the circumstances. The vicious brutality with which the natives expelled their former overlords was a shock to many, especially the Portuguese, who owned a number of trading posts and fortresses along the western coast of India.

The previous years had seen a very different trend emerge in Portuguese India. While the English had been leaving, the population of Velha Goa had been swelling. The fall of Portugal in 1863 had forced many to flee to the colonies, and the sale of Mozabique and the other African for war-money had left the fleeing Portuguese with few safe destinations. When the mutiny broke out, Governer José Rodrigues Coelho do Amaral, newly arrived from Macao, chose to supply the revolting princes with modern weapons. This move ensured the survival of the Portuguese fortresses, and doomed those British still holding on with frantic tenacity.

The Indian religious wars a decade later lead to an influx of Muslim natives to the fortified Portuguese cities. Strong alliances with local Maratha princes helped protect the cities from the dangerous weight of the new Hindu Raj.

1879 saw the arrival of two new faces to the colonies. To this point, Goa and the rest of the coastal cities had been ruled aimlessly by colonial governors interested only in self preservation.

How Joaquim Mouzhino smuggled the last surviving member of the deposed Braganzana dynasty out of her Austrian prison is unknown, but the arrival of the 18-year old princess and the grizzled colonial veteran signalled a new age for the beset cities. Within a decade, Mouzhino had succeeded in tying a number of the local principalities into the structure of what was now Royal India, arranging for th Infanta's marriage to Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar IX, of the much-reduced Princely State of Mysore. The union of the cities of Goa and Mangalore (the coastal bastion of the rump-state that remained after the invasion of the Hindustani armies) created a powerful axis which dominated southern India.

Other local triumphs included the re-taking of Colombo from Tamil rebels and the construction of the Goan-Mangalore railroad.

Today, the Royal State is extending it's reach. Talk has been made of re-taking Macao from the crumbling Manchu empire, or of confronting Luminifera for control of Mozambique. The ships of the Royal Fleet sail far and wide, bringing wealth to the fortified coastal enclaves which even now need every ounce of strength they have to maintain their independence from competing trading nations and fractured but massive Hindoostan.

I just realized something, Oman's army is of the small proffecional type. If one wants to go for peasant levies, then for the same amount of points one would get a 400,000 man army. So I retract my "feels a bit smallish" comment.

The Speed category is causing me some concerns. I'm planning to have a bunch of torpedo boats for local defense. These are normally fast, but with terrible range. So I'd expect my TP boats to be faster than battleships, just unable to fight them more than 100/150 kms offshore (at most). Or should I mention what the expected attribute should be (my 5 speed TP and my 5 speed destroyer could be optimized for speed or range respectively)

The categories are kind of relative. A 2 speed TP will still be much faster than a 20 speed BB.
Thirdfain wrote:Keep in mind that your spending is relative- putting 150 points into firepower and 0 into anything else doesn't mean your ship can't move- it just means that it's completely optimized for firepower, and is extremely slow, unmaneuverable, and lightly protected. This is most important when building the smallest vessels- a torpedo boat might cost 2 points- you'd only be able to boost 1 of the 5 stats. Spending it on firepower would mean it's still a fast, nasty torpedo boat- but with an extra torpedo tube as opposed to a larger engine.

If it is relative to the weight of the ship, I'm perfectly happy. So my 500 tonne 3 speed TP will be much faster than anything else on the water unless they are willing to put 2/3 of their points in speed.

(took me over an Hour to write this!)
EDIT:Changed Railroads on map.

Nation of Crossroadia First Annual Industrial Report.

As Reviewed by the National Surveyors, and heads of the Nation, the First Report for the Nation of Crossrodia follows.

As of this year, chief Industrials shall be put forward into Iron, Coal, and Food . Vast fields of Opium have been found native to the island, though these areas are being bared from Citizens as narcotics are banned to the general populace.

National Surveys of all populated areas have been concluded and reports of major areas are as follows.
Image
Capital Centris Trona, The great and powerful base for the nation of Crossroadia. When the Consortium of Industrials and companies first fled Europe, they landed in the large harbour that now is Centris Trona. The City itself is Crossroadias largest and holds all of the nations main learning centers as well as financial districts.

The Toric Shipyards Located in the second largest harbour on the Island, the city of Toric bustles with Industry and the thick clouds of Factories the churn out most manufactured goods. In the large bay massive Dry-docks are built full of the ships of the Crossroadian Navy.

The Fortress City of Shyron Located on the southern most point of the nation, the largest costal fortress is also the most secluded city. Encompassing almost the whole island in great walls, the City itself is the center for some of the most secret studies into science and technology preformed by the National Government.

The Fishing Town of Pensar Noted more for its scenic beauty then it’s Industry, the town provides much of the fresh Seafood for the larger cities.

The Mining Town of Obsen Hosting the largest Coal mines in the nation, the small town holds the largest Train yards, shipping much needed coal all across the country.

The Mining Town of Eldric Yielding more Iron then all other mines, the town of Eldric is one of Crossroadias most important resources. Producing the raw ore and smelting it into larges Iron Igants, almost all of its production goes toward the city of Toric.

The Farming town of Townsville Producing the staples of food for all citizens from Executives to simple Employees. Grains, Meat, Dairy products and Fruit and Vegitables, the City of Townsville produces massive amounts, enough to feed the ever-growing cities.

The Trading Town of Rinnera A haven for any merchant from any nation. The city flourish in man merchant industries and has the second larges shipyards in the nation where almost all trading ships are produced. The town is also infamously known for a large Black-market and illicit Opium dens.

Hey, Thirdfain. You changed the infantry but left the cavarly the same. The original was 20 men per point or 5 men on horses per point. That's a 4/1 ratio. Keeping the 4/1 ratio after making it 200 infantry per point would mean you get 50 horses per point.

I just assumed this is what he intended.

Considering how well our resources complement one another (between us we have every resource on the board save silk) it's possible that we have a trading relationship which would leave him with the weapons, although it's a long way from Borneo to Oman. Since Beowulf appears to have set himself up as a weapons exporter and I hadn't really intended such, and since he's geographically far closer to Borneo, it may make more sense for Crossroadia to use Lee-Nordenfelts.

The only really substantive differences would be that the Lee-Nordenfelt has a fully detachable magazine--the usefulness of which is debateable in an 1890s context--and is slightly smaller caliber. On that second point it's worth mentioning that the Japanese themselves found that their 6.5x50mm had insufficient power and adopted a larger round. But overall there probably won't be much difference between them.

EDIT:
Another point, Crossroads--rail lines and cities in the interior of Borneo aren't really possible. Even in 2006 the thickly forested and mountainous interior of Borneo is undeveloped; it would have been completely impossible to lay track up there in 1890.

Map Update!

I went back and found a new map that I could start fresh with and would look better. Its kinda different in places and sizes.. But it should still be ok for the game. The only player I havn't marked is Nit as I'm unsure of exactly what Areas of the African Coast he has claimed of yet.

If I have left anyone else off the map let me know! Naturally I can/will edit this on the wishes of anyone or as Thirdfain needs.

NEW GAME MAP!!!

EDIT: Remote linked the map as it was rather Huge.

The detachable magazine has debatable usefulness, yes, but Nordenfelt is being visionary. It's still hard for me to believe someone could make 38 aimed shots in a minute with a Lee-Enfield. As for the caliber, several nations used rifles of about that caliber in this time frame, and it's longer than most, which means it's more power. In game, there was a debate between speed and caliber. The speed freaks advocated high-speed for better accuracy (flatter trajectory). The caliber chauvinsts were for the larger wound channel, and better retained energy. Speed won this round. Why I choose the caliber is due largely to my reading of Tony William's website. Historically, the Japanese adopted the larger round right before the advent of the assault rifle, which went for intermediate power cartidges. Oops.

On another note I'm just going to fact check some of my Nation Declaration tommorow and it should be posted tommorow afternoonish.

I am curious of this as well. Nacartocs will be heavily regulated if not banned in my nation, and I'm not sure how many other nations will want them. Silks and Spices are nice, but Opium?

And Straha? You'll have to point me out the islands your talking about and I'll go back and give'em. Keep in mind though that most small islands I'm leaving 'blank' as I'm not sure yet just what the exact borders are or what Thirdfains wants us to do in terms of claiming new territory.

Right now The map, aside from the placements of Fortress, is mostly fluff. I threw so much stuff out at once mainly hoping for feedback and to see how much is passable or needs to be reworked. Obviouslly I will re-draw the map to reflect this and lay roads where I can for the time being.

At the least I would hope a large looping track along the Coast WOULD be possible if just to tie the cities together.

And I, too, would be interested in a game mechanic for Q-ships, armed merchantmen, and privateers...

Edit: And before I forget it: Transports? How much point costs for troop transports?
