UPDATE! NEW CHARACTER!
Ike
From Fire Emblem, Ike appears! The fact that he can wield a two-handed sword with a single hand is a testament to his magnificent strength.
His brings his special move "Aether" with him as he crashes the Brawl party. Try for a single-stroke finishing blow with his mighty blade!

Looks like Ike may be a Roy-type character, given the two-handed sword (probably handled similar to how Roy handles his sword) and one-hit KO move. I wonder if they'll have someone roughly equivalent to Marth (quick, good melee range, and fast attacks) or if they'll merge Roy and Marth.

I'm hoping for some rapier-drawing Lord Eliwood action, in that case.

Ike's advantage over Eliwood is that they already had a 3D model of him. If we were to see another Fire Emblem character for the fast attack kind of thing, I expect we'll see Sothe take that role.

You're kidding right? If we were to see another Fire Emblem character they wouldn't be from Path of Radiance. Unless I didn't get the memo, how do we know that Marth and Roy aren't on this game?

I was kinda hoping for Hector, but having an FE character make the roster (a new one, that is) is nothing to frown about.

Three Fire Emblem characters would be excessive. Fuck, TWO was excessive, only saved by the fact that they were awesome. It's 'Super Smash Brothers', not 'Fire Emblem Fighting Oh And Some Other Guys Like Mario'.

Sothe is one of the two "Lord" characters for the first chapter of the Path of Radiance sequel on the Wii, Goddess of Dawn. They could easily use him in his promote class, Espion.

Update: The stage we've all been wwaiting for:
T
his stage represents the Fire Emblem world.
It’s an enemy castle in the midst of battle – but it’s not set in a particular castle, nor is it from a particular game in the series.
screenshot
It’s taking heavy fire, huh?
There are plenty of scenes like this throughout the Fire Emblem series, aren’t there? So imagine it however you choose.
screenshot
Fireballs launched by catapults dance in the skies above the castle. Then, as time passes...
screenshot
The floor shatters and everyone falls into the castle!
See the stone statues in the throne room? You can break them to bits.
screenshot
Down it goes!
Oh, but it doesn’t end here.
screenshot
Quick! To the underground!
What’s the underground like? You can look forward to finding out later.

Hey, three would be fine ... if there were something like a zillion other characters. I mean, unless they drop Ganondorf for no reason (which would be silly because he's awesome), there will be three Legend of Zelda characters - considering the Twilight Princess theme, it's unlikely that Kid Link will make an appearence. Perhaps wolf Link being ridden by Midna might appear though. That could be cool.

I'm just now noticing that all the characters that they showed before Ike come in at the start of the game. So that would mean that we have to unlock Ike.

Yeah, it'd be fine if it was King of Fighters-style 'every motherfucker we can squeeze into the game' stuff, but I think 3 out of say 50 characters for such an unknown game would be nuts. Unless they put in Ocelot and LoLo, and Link's fairy and Sonic and Knuckles and Doom Sonic and shit.

Ocelot would be the shiznizzle.
Also, while it's only recently been released in the west, I wouldn't call Fire Emblem an 'unknown' game. It's been around for seventeen years in Japan and is pretty damn popular, as I understand it.

Update: Single Player: Just Wow:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Subspace Emissary is a robust side-scrolling action game!

More than anything, Smash Bros. is a competitive action game. People have been kind enough to praise its multiplayer aspects, but we’ve never been able to create a fully-fleshed out single-player game.
This time, though, we’ve managed to create a complete side-scrolling action game. It’s storyline isn’t overwrought – it’s hastened along by a bunch of quick movies.

The Adventure mode also emphasises character development. You’ll see many famous characters persevering under the weight of their personal histories, shouldering their unique burdens... It’s really something you won’t see anywhere else.

With so many wonderful characters appearing together, it’s like a dream action game. We’re putting tons of fighting spirit into making this game, so I hope you’re all looking forward to it.
Oh, and this is all included in the same Game Disc, so rest easy.

I wondered when it was gonna happen again:
They just told more than they intended to there: I think it's a safe bet that Peach is a playable character again.

Wasn't that obvious? Some characters you know are guaranteed to shoe up again.
Anyway let's face adventure mode needed a serious update and they gave it to us.

You know, way back when after I got Melee, I once thought: 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if SSB had a proper plot?'. I never really expected that they'd try and put one together (no idea why), but they have. I wonder how it will be handled in terms of characters - will every character be playable, or will it focus upon a core cast? I mean, Brawl could have potentially oodles of characters, and if they were all somehow included ... well, I would be impressed.

This is an item that has absolutely no effect on characters...but it’s pretty fun.
When you hit something with one of these...
PSHHHHH! It releases a cloud of colored smoke!
As the cloud forms, it blocks your vision with an effective smoke screen.
If your opponent gets caught in a thick cloud of smoke, it’s a distraction, and if you’re covered in smoke, it’s harder for your opponent to see what moves you’re doing.
Hmm... So colorful!
You can even pick up Smoke Balls that are emitting smoke and carry them or throw them. Talk about smoke and mirrors!
Cough! Cough!
Here's today's update the Smoke Ball.

Today's update: more on Ike!
Ike’s up special move, obviously, is "Aether." And it is ethereal. Oh, yes.
Up Special Move: Aether
First he throws the sword!
Then he leaps after it and catches it in midair!
Then he swiftly plunges, slicing the air!
Of special importance is the fact that he is resistant to attacks for a moment right after throwing his sword.
He’s not flinching?!
He’s not really invincible—he still takes damage. But he won’t flinch in the slightest.
This time, there are several moves like this among the heavy characters, so watch out!
Oh, he also has this special move...
Standard Special Move: Eruption
His standard special move is called Eruption!
You can even charge this one up.

He's more recognizable like that, for those who are familiar with the game, but haven't played it over half the way through.

This is the part that interests me the most. This should really help the big, slow characters. They'll still take damage when pulling off their moves, but they won't be knocked out of them quite as easily.

Indeed, I always wanted to use Bowser as a character, but found him too ungainly to keep up with my peers.
