Crappy monitor?

There is a reason that movies only shovs pictures at 24fps eatch a little diffrent than the one preeceding it.
There are actually two different sources of flickering.

Movies are shown with three times 24 fps. This means that 24 fps are recorded. But the Hardware playing the movie opens and closes a shutter thee times per frame, meaning that we see 72fps.
This type of flickering is because when one frame turns off and the next turns on, there´s a short period of black. The eye is able to recognize this brightness difference. Therefore the time this brightness difference takes must be very short.

The speed with wich stuff moves is also a problem. Normally 24 fps are enough to create a soft movement but if the speed of, for example a camera is too fast it is problematic. Directors therefore usualy move the camera either slow enough or really, really fast.

I'm using a Benq FP71E+. It's not a widescreen however, and its a 17 inch monitor with 8ms response time.

I've been playing games like BF2, FEAR, Oblivion etc on it with no problems.

Excellent taste my man. ;)

Anyway, I don't think people percieve the scanrate at 60Hz+ unless it's *broken*. Let's face it, CRTs die really slowly, and they often go out of sync, or can't maintain exactly the horizontal/vertical scan ratio, or whatever - it won't be *visible*, but you can certainly percieve that the image you're looking at isn't flat or square or whatever. Just like how they often start to whine at really high freqencies that you can't technically hear, but it can still give you a headache.

The non-flatness of CRTs irritates me these days. I've been using a good, high contrast LCD for so long that CRTs appall me in all cases except the dot pitch on good CRTS - which amusingly are often older ones. A friend of mine used to have a absolutely giant 90s 21" CRT - less viewable area than my 1.2kg LCD, but it was the sharpest thing I've ever seen. Of course, it weighed more than me.

No, some people can perceive a flicker at 60hz (even easier if you're not looking directly at it) even on a brand-new, perfectly-working CRT.

Anyways, an update: apparently there are LCDs in development with 120hz refresh rate, and Black Frame Insertion that reduce ghosting. I think I'm going to hold off until those LCDs hit the market.

Running a SyncMaster 955DF CRT w/ my xorg.conf hacked to run at 1400x1050 (it's capable of 1600x1200 w/ flicker, recommended resolution 1280x1024, so not really overdriving it, although if it dies I'll just get an LCD). Fonts are just slightly blurry, but that's because I'm using 8pt as my default UI font to compensate for lack of resolution :P .

Sorry for the bump, but I just wanted to add on more thing about flicker on a CRT. Sometimes seeing the flicker has to do with the lighting in the house/office. Fluorescent lights also run at frequencies around 60 Hz, the same as the AC voltage coming in and the same as the monitor at some settings. for whatever reason, this makes the flicker on the monitor appear that much worse.

I've got a ViewSonic VX922 myself, and I've had no problems with it in games. I did notice a bit of ghosting at first, since I'd only used CRTs before, but I've become used to it in the ~2 weeks I've had it. It only has one dead pixel, too, way down in the bottom left corner.
