Laser mice, definitely. Trackballs are atrocious for gaming. I don't even like to surf the internet with the damn things. The mouse I have is quite nice, except for the fact that the scroll button is useless. I can't set it to not do something in Windows, so if I click it in a game said game will be minimized. Fantastic.

Optical mouse. Really I never appreciate it more than when I try to use my old ball mouse on the original PC we owned. I used to think it was pretty decent, but now I know better. Probably the way I used to think 56K was pretty decent, until we got cable. :D

I have tried using trackballs though. Never got the damned things to work well for me, so I'll stick with the mouse. Even though I probably need a new one, since my scroll wheel doesn't manage to scroll anymore (I can click it and do it that way, but the wheel itself no longer scrolls).

As for touchpads, they can be annoying at times, but never to the point that I've considered taking the time and effort to go buy a mouse for my laptop because of it. :)

I'm guessing you're referring to optical mice. Laser mice are amazing, though. Logitech MX 1000 is incredibly precise and ergonomic - if they weren't $60+ I'd use nothing else.
