How many unrestored flintlock muskets can still be fired? They're so rare that a genuine one would go for thousands of dollars. And a flintlock musket was built to last a lot longer than even an AK, Thompson, or other highly reliable 20th century firearm.

Honestly, after 80 years of people hiding in vaults, it would probably be mostly spears and bows.
Remember that the Vaults were a fully functioning city- with a security department and armory. When they came out, of course they'd bring their guns, and the knowledge to maintain them, with them.

So guns and such aren't a problem, I just don't buy that almost 70 years from now the most common gun in the Wastes would be an M16 or something.
That I can buy, but part of what I was saying was that by 2070, the only functioning 20th century guns still around would probably be collector's items, and I still have trouble with the proliferation of working guns amongst the people who weren't in the vault. Not to mention the question of where the ammo keeps coming from. Not saying they should have changed it to a game where everyone uses spears, mind you, they just should have given it enough thought to give a plausible explanation on some datapad somewhere.

Never mind that if they had suffered the same kind of social collapse as the US, there probably isn't a Chinese or Russian army worth speaking of anymore.

Yeah, the 20th century guns are my main gripe. I remember in Fallout there was like, a handful of Desert Eagles (a handful too many, though the description in the game acknowledged it was a popular movie pistol and not much else) and in a by-comparison nice touch, that Mauser pistol in the hands of the crime boss in Junktown.

In Fallout it's explained the weapons dealers in the Boneyard have a working ammunition plant, recylcing used brass and all. A few places like that should be able to meet the demand, maybe.

You're right V the old comment was stupid. I wouldn't mind the Enclave coming back as long as they're not the main enemy, but it's not like B's saying Enclave's the main bad guys so I shouldn't have begged the question.

But I couldn't care less if it was more east and there were Chinese soldiers. The soldiers in San Francisco were descendants of Chinese submariners. The Enclave was the US military's gestapo (actually worse, SS). It's not implausable that China and Russia has vaults, I'd laugh at a Chinese version of Vault-Tek. And the Russian question has to be answered anyway. Maybe an expedition by the Russians into America for "humanitarian" reasons heh heh. And the Chinese doing the same thing, and some kind of rumble, and poor helpless Americans in the middle of it all. Yeah, that wouldn't be so bad.

And the Enclave could even be the good guys in this one, protecting American interests against the evil commie invaders. Yesssss. The duck and cover feel. With the ending like this: choose to launch America's last working ICBM against one of two foreign invaders, and the other taking them out some other way. Yesssss.

What resources are these "foreign invaders" using to invade with? And what are they invading for.

Really, in the context of a post apocalyptic setting the very concept of foreign invasion is completely stupid, because any organisational level beyond the immediate locality is all but irrelevant.

Actually, the establishment of a national government is a very common theme in post-apocalyptic setting. And rather than have the usual government versus locals like The Postman, or total absence of government, why not have a foreign invasion. I'm not exactly talking D-Day here, if invasion was the wrong word it could be foreign meddling. We already had Chinese influence in Fallout 2. The invasion could be a small group of men coming in to finish off the Americans, and the resources come from vault dwellers who just left and detected a nuclear explosion on the oil rig and think the Americans are back in business so they got to annihilate them before the Americans do the same. See, with the right imagination it's possible.

If Bethesda keeps up art like this, my hope that Fallout 3 will have the appropriate ambience is well-founded:

Awesome poster shot.

I'll wait for screenshots, but it's nice to see Pip Boy.

Urge to kill mutants... Rising... Rising...

Also, that poster art is promising. It has the cheerful optimism and depressing darkness so very Fallout. (Remember the haunting winds by the coast in Fallout 2? That is basically my defining memory of what the Wastes need to be like.)
