On that image with the romans, try desaturating a bit and raising the contrast slightly.

Hmm... lets see. The opposing army should be walking on somthing with a lighter color. Not quite a beach, but but not the same brown the Romans are on.
There should be light filtering through the trees (the diagonal lines).
The butterfly and dragonfly need some color.
I was thinking a dark brown for the pants, but I really dig the red.
The flags should be a different color then red just for some contrast.
The lead soldier has blonde hair and his praetorian (body guard) has black.

That all said. Fucking sweet!

Note that objects that are further away from the viewer are generally percieved as paler, as grayer than object close to the viewer.

Right ON!! I so rarely color my own stuff (once ever 10 years... literally), and I have to use colored pencils, so it's nice to see some polish on 'em. Awesome man.

Nitpick: That is late 70's through early 90's brown and orange Wolverine.

Haha thanks. My laptop is a tablet, but I got used to using a mouse. Also, the touchscreen is kinda shitty.

If someone provides me a pic of the space marines, I'll recolor them and pray for my forgiveness from the machine spirit.
