Just a point, the structure of the planet is riddled with catacombs correct? Its quite possible that the beam simply sliced through the ground into more empty areas and the major energy was contained in there and not forced back upto the surface.

Hmmm
This reminds me of many arguments about laser/explosive properties and I must say that a laser would more likely just burn a nice little hole in the ground, of course heat conduction will spread this out over the entire area if the material is conductive enough, or if the laser is left on for a long period of time.
And as for the off beat thing, I have this old news clip from the 70's where a whale beaches it's self and dies, and the council decides the best way to get rid of it is by, well blowing it up with enough TNT to vaporise it. It failed, and the entire beach was covered with whale flubber. LOL. Anyone wants it I will email it to them, it's quite funny.
