Weird I thought I remembered reading Peallon seeing the tip of the kinfe sticking out of the front of Thrawn's chest... But its been awhile since I read 'The Last Command'

Either way I don't see why Thrawn thought being stabbed by a Noghri was an artistic way to go...

He waited until the Battle was less steady; so it would have a better effect on messing with the Imp Fleet.

And the idea that the Empire stabbed the Noghri people, and this would be a fitting revenge.

And possibly Thrawn was like the Jedi and Grievous in his disdain for blasters (At least mass-produced blasters) and preferred "one of a kind" weapons.

Which from what I read on here is basically a total rip of Anakin Skywalker's fall from the PT. So how that's a "top moment of the EU" I don't know. Unless the rest of the EU just sucks that bad.

No, it is Traitor - all of it basically. The whole thing was a very good lift of Dante's Inferno.

This was definitely true for me; hell, I remember the word phrasing for most of that section, and the last time I read Traitor was at least a year ago.

I thought that when Thrawn said, "It was so artistically done" he meant the Empire controlling the Noghri for all those years without them even being aware of the manipulation by the Empire.

And I'll third the mention of Traitor. Ganner's last stand was incredibly well written.

I'll also mention Allston's writing in Rebel Stand, specifically the parts with Tahiri and Viqi Shesh, I think those moments were very good.

Ah, you're right. I could've sworn that it was the handle of the knife sticking out of Thrawn's chest...

Mention of Rebel Stand made me think of it and Rebel Dream also. Personally Operation Emporer's Hammer and Emporer's Lance were some of my all time fav's in those books.

Allston is great at writing emotionally effective pieces. Phanan's death was a great piece of writing. Phanan himself was a great piece of writing.

Indeed. He is the opposite of Vader in that his good side is his mask, his good traits a cover for the personal darkness he battles, his cybernetic parts were donned not out of his greed but from his sacrafice, and his death a result of accident rather then choice. He is an incredibly good humored, out going, extroverted and assertive guy steadily becoming more isolated and withdrawn over the years because of the social stigma of cybernetic parts. The more he is pushed away the harder he tries to join in which leads to more damage, to more parts, to being pushed away harder. And eventually it goes until the man he once was is his outside face, while in private he is a sad, lonely alcoholic mourning his past. It is a very beautiful piece of writing, on a level you rarely see in most novels, much less the claptrap of pulp sci-fi spinoff merchendise.

Pretty much every Wraith was a nutjob like that. What with Kell freezing up in combat, Face's guilt about his child acting, Falynn Skimmer's inferioty complex and so on. The less said about Myn Donos and Gara Petothol/Lara Nostil/Kirney Slane the better.

I've just got through re-reading the three Wraith Squadron books and now I wished he'd been able to do more. Does the Courtship of Princess Leia finish off Zsinj's tale with anything near Allston's style? Plus I want to know want happened to Donos and Nostil! We know Donos was a Rogue until the time of Thrawn at least.

I think the Courtship of Princess Leia is one of the best standalone books in the EU, if for nothing other than Luke flying the Falcon entirely by himself using the force.

But unfortunately, it is nothing like Allston's style. Allston just took a couple lame villains from Courtship, improved them dramatically, and used them as his villains.

Sooo. Allston = best SW EU author?


I'd agree to that, although I thought AC Crispin's young Han Solo trilogy was pretty decent too.

Any thoughts on those books?

I liked 'em. Good writing, and I really appreciated that the whole thing is based on Han and Chewie's greed, not some super-righteous crusade to save the galaxy. It was believable, and the ass-end of the galaxy..... seemed like the ass-end of the galaxy.
