Well - again, while i can see how you might easily have taken it that way that was hardly my intent - and I apologize for coming off that way. In either case, I didn't ignore the rest of your post; and yes, i do use the SCP version in a less graphically intense mode. Which build of the SCP version; well i'm not 1337 enough to know...or even to care to be entirely honest; but there you have it.
Anyway - has anyone made a SW-mod of Freespace? I remember reading in a forum that it's possible to alter the graphical designs of the ships using some patch.

Stark wrote:Yeah, I haven't messed with my vp setup since I got all my favourite campaigns working. The barriers to entry for SCP can be pretty high, because it's a pain in the fucking ass to get all the shit you need to run stuff without trawling the forums for ages. Shivan had a nice pre-built install, which was self contained, but I'm not sure if it's still there.
I've got it if you want it, but I had crash problems with the fullpack.

Quite simple to know, just bloody run the game, bottom left/right of the choose pilot screen. Should be there.

...Wow... Wow....
It's called changing models, it exists, it's in the works.

Freespace is awesome, I haven't gotten to play it in a while.
I agree on Transcend, that was just creepy.

Holy shit, that's awesome - any website/forum about it? A Star Wars space shooter based of the FreeSpace engine would kick a lot of ass, IMNSHO. Can you link me to more info about it?

The best place I can recommend are the
Hard Light forums, where most of the campaign work and SCP retooling appears to be focused. I'm sure Ace Pace and the others have other links as well.

*Grumble* The installer stopped installing midway through; it's been at the same point for the past sixteen hours or so.

Does the Linux port of Freespace 2 still have the issue where none of the FMV bits will play? I remember that was a problem when the game was first ported, due to it using some sort of proprietary codec, although now that it's free I'd imagine they could just re-encode the videos as Theora or something.

They changed to some open codec, so the Linux builds should be the same. Versions of the cutscenes are available on the forums, just don't ask me where.

Well that was a bust. Is there any way to install to install the Linux version without having to deal with the festering pile of excrement that is Java?

So... Neither installer seems to work, and the intall_error.log tells me nothing that I can understand.

Any ideas?
EDIT: Or is this where I get a brain and try looking at the forums of the people responsible? Hmm...
DOUBLE EDIT: Or, the Hard-Light server could be down, and there aren't any forums linked anywhere on the site, and I could be screwed.
SWEAR TO GOD, LAST EDIT: So, my guess as to why the installers don't work is that the website the files were ganked from no longer seems to be on the interwebs. Can anyone else get it working?

The server that hosts the Hardlight site and associated forums have been down all day, it seems. Somewhat odd, but hopefully they'll be up tomorrow.
A traceroute doesn't go anywhere - it might be a DNS issue.
EDIT: It appears to be solved now, as the forums are loading swiftly at the moment. Everyone, try again now.

The Hardlight servers are up, and still no joy. What's going on?
I'm using Kubuntu 7.04

I'm downloading
this right now and I've already downloaded the
binary installer. Hopefully these two together will allow the game to run.
EDIT: It seems to work. I opened the ZIP file that the Torrent downloaded, extracted the Freespace2.zip file from that ZIP, then moved the FreeSpace2 directory from the subzip to /usr/local/games/fs2_open. I then ran the binary installer as root and installed the Linux binaries to /usr/local/games/fs2_open as well, and now the game seems to run fine. I haven't tried any of the FMVs yet, though, and I can't seem to adjust the resolution to something other than 640x480.
EDIT AGAIN: It looks like you can adjust the resolution by editing ~/.fs2_open/fs2_open.ini. Also, if you install the game as root, make sure you don't launch the game from the installer, as that will cause your .fs2 directory to belong to root and will give you problems when you try to run the game again as a normal user. If you accidentally created the .fs2 directory as root, delete it and run the game again as your normal user to re-create it with the proper permissions.
EDIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME: Even after getting the game to run, I was still experiencing a glitch where the smoke effects from damaged ships or missile trails would have ugly opaque black squares around them. I was able to fix them by installing the patches linked to
here. Just uncompressive the archives and move the .vp files to the mediavps subdirectory of your FreeSpace 2 installation directory. Everything seems to be working fine now.

Well, their server's back up. I got the game installed today. And it rocks my socks off.

I'm glad you liked it. The immersion factor in the game is - to be blunt - completely unlike any other game I've ever seen before; and I loved it.

Turns out their normal-map test is pretty nice. It'd be nice if it didn't take nine months to percolate through all the textures, too.
EDIT: Are you serious? You think your post, which doesn't even mention the SCP, is why people are playing it?

Hmmm... The Java installer still isn't working for me. It might be because I'm using the GNU Java interpreter instead of Sun's version. The version I'm using only supports Java 1.4.2 and I think the installer needs 1.5. Anyway, Ubuntu 7.10's coming out tomorrow and hopefully it'll include a newer version. If not, I'll just have to install the Sun Java interpreter.

I know you've probably already heard this, but I believe you can use some kind of Java 1.5 hacked to work. I've never tried, but apparently it's possible... just don't ask me where on their crazy forums this information is.

Actually, I think I've got pretty much everything working as-is. I'll just need to modify my commandline slightly if I want to play an add-on campaign.

Is there no Linux launcher? That's a pain in the ass.

It's a bit annoying, but I just modified the Freespace 2 entry in my Gnome applications menu to include all the various commandline options I need to enable all the features.

For those who have beaten the default campaign (and spoilers for those that haven't):

make it to the jump point before the timer runs out, or take the pussy way out ant sit in the node for the whole mission, letting the Shivans slaughter the refugees.
Unfortunatly, I think you have to replay the whole campaign again to get that ending.
