My friend's a huge fan of Advent Rising and says that the plot is pretty good. What were the problems you had with it?

Humans are long-lost gods of some sort. Also, an entire race and planet has been destroyed rather casually and suddenly.

I didnt find the god thing any odd, since there are lots of sci fi with even more ridiculous things, and humans only had the one planet, what did you expect? For there to be a massive war before they died?
