This has stopped smoking?

People are fucking dumb. Telling them an agonizing death does not stop anyone until it is usually too late.

As for the article, not unheard of, but glad that there is a bit more news on it...since I know many people who love to claim only alcoholism is bad, and really there are only a couple side effects.

Bullshit. People have known that alcohol can fuck you up for centuries. It is hardly an example of something you can't live without, or something that is so innocuous that it should come as a shock that it's bad for you.

The simple reality is that a lot of people are too fucking stupid to accept reality, so they try to drown it out with platitudes and stupid shit rationalizations like "everyone dies sooner or later anyway", as if that will make them feel better when they're lying in a hospital bed praying for a donor.

Minor rant, but its related.

One of the "beer is healthy" arguments that always pissed me off is that beer is a source of vitamin B. A pity that its the Brewers Yeast that has the B-complex, not the finished product. And AFAIK, any leftover yeast is filtered out of the more common styles of beer (I think only Hefeweizen keeps it in). So the very thing that people claim makes beer "good for you" isn't even in the damn drink at the time of consumption.

Every single one of those alcohol apologist arguments has always reeked of self-justification. These people intend to continue drinking no matter what the medical science says, so they data-mine for conclusions that suit their intentions.

Oh, I know. I just find it amazing that the thought of cirrosis and early onset alzheimers isn't enough to get some people to stop, but cancer might push a few people into cutting back or quitting.

Disregarding the fact that low to moderate consumption of red wine is good for you?

No it isn't. The only good thing is the flavonoids, which you can easily get from un-fermented grape juice without the alcohol. Moreover, I anticipated and answered this point in the very first post of this fucking thread, you goddamned imbecile. Learn to read.

There's a reason stuff like that works best in movies where the scriptwriter tells the other guy to act like an idiot and then splutter incoherently by way of response. It's the same way Chick tracts work. It doesn't validate smoking or any other dumbshit behaviour.

Nevermind that alcohol itself reduces cardiovascular risk if ingested in moderate amounts.

Once again, there are plenty of other ways of reducing your blood pressure, fool. Ways that don't involve shrinking your brain and giving you cancer.

This is like a smoking apologist saying that it's good for you because it helps you lose weight (and no, that's not a made-up argument; it's been used). As if there's no way to lose weight besides smoking.

Once again, since you are apparently too fucking stupid to understand a point even after it's been repeated twice, there's nothing in those studies which indicates effects that could not also be produced by altering your diet. It's still the same logic as the smoking/weight-loss argument.

It's funny how alcohol can be the cause of 75000 deaths in 2001 alone (according to the CDC), yet anyone who has a problem with this is being a tight-ass. Meanwhile, other problems that cause a small fraction of those deaths incite rage and no one has a problem with that, because it's, like, totally different, dude!

BTW, I quit smoking 2.5 months ago. I feel a lot better. Even cut way back on the drinking.

You honestly can't think of any incident or social problem which has caused less than 75000 deaths in one year and which still incited rage?

Good thing I'm not any kind of drinker except for once/twice a year. Though I think my eating habits are bad, I need to get off my lazy-arse and do some more exercise (I'm slim, but what the hell does that have to do with anything) and the food around my work is all terrible (packed lunches)?

Packed lunches is a start. Avoid the processed/junk foods you're likely to find in vending machines or from the cafeteria kitchen at work and you're heading in the right direction. If you work in a multi-story building, use the stairs instead of the elevators.

I still haven't seen any evidence from anyone that drinking is bad for you period.

I've seen lots of evidence that excessive drinking is bad for you, and I agree with it.

This thread again, like all the other alcohol threads, boils down to "Excessive drinking is bad for you".

The article at the beginning does nothing to say otherwise.

Find me some evidence that drinking 4 pints in a week is going to kill me and I might change my mind.

Taking a salad to work rather than sandwiches is a good thing, too. I don't know about Australia, but in here most grocery stores sell pre-made salad by the kilogram, so you can drop by, buy a small cup and take it to work, and it will be fresh.

Veggies fill you up and contain delicious nutrients, too. Win-win.

Or, sometimes, I take canned corn or beans with me if I can't cut it otherwise :D
