Correction: "r" is used in both Japanese and Chinese (arigato, renminbi), it's just when another consonant is placed in front of the "r" that ploblems occur. "l" appears in chinese, but does not appear in japanese.

Actually, Innerbrat's right about Japanese, at least. It's only transcribed as an 'R' becasue it's the closest equivalent in English. Trust me, hearing a gaijin speak Japanese using English 'R's is horribly painful, like nails on a chalkboard. I clench my teeth whenever I hear that awful gaijin accent try to pronounce 'thank you' as "ARRiGatOu!!"

Yeah... we were learning about Shinto in Humanaties, and the teacher kept pronouncing torii "Tor-ie". Arrgh! I corrected her like five times, too! >_<
