In any case, they're worth quite a bit on the open market. Depending on the nature of the campaign, possibly more than the 20k in gold that was in question in the first place.

Given that he's pretty useless without them, why not just steal them and ransom 'em back to him? After roughing him up, of course.

2. Yes, I'm the DM.

3. It's not about punishing the Wizard, just about him dealing with the consequences of his actions. Which again are pissing off his mates and then shafting & pissing off 21 soldiers who just bled & lost friends for him. And he is now on a barge, in the middle of no where with said 21 disgruntled soldiers and no friends for at least the next 3 days.
