What, the one with the extendable stock that NO ONE ever extended, so all the supposedly pro marines are all running round with stock-less guns like a bunch of somali militia? That one?

I thought the not-super-badass guns were good, they did make you feel more vulnerable and were more realistic; it's not as if you find RL marines all running around with M60's and somehow-attatched M203's and TOW's or something. The military don't make anti-demon rounds or specifically design guns to sound badass.

That might actually be a good idea. If you can scare the piss out of your enemies and keep your own troops from getting scared (by keeping them pumped up), you win.

Realistic? Please DOOM FAILED because it followed the New/OLD standard FPS convention, Pistols and the SMG shall use the same ammo, but some-how the SMG has do only 2/3 the damage a Pistol does.

And further-more the Assault rifle was good from Minute 1, Mission One, it go better as the game went on thanks to upgrades which despite bigger and badder enemies made it just as viable during the first mission as the final boss.

Compare that to Doom-3, a Pistol which shot what sounded and felt like .22 pistol rounds with half the grain remove, a Shot-gun armed with bird-shot, and an sub-machine gun which fired BB's rather than bullets.

I played through most of Doom-3 with the frigging pistol because per-shot it does more damage than everything but the BFG and the Rocket launcher. It's not a happy game for the whole "shooting" aspect.

And by New/OLD FPS convention I mean the Half-Life Convention, thou shall have a slow firing pistol that's better than everything else, thou shall have a inaccurate smg. And a semi-effective pistol.

Don't you know? That's called 'balanced'. Making pistols short-range weapons for low-intensity combat or backup would be retarded, who'd use a pistol for that? :roll: It's impossible to balance guns in games without using rate of fire or damage, right? :lol:

The best part about FEAR's Fettle thing was that the FEAR squad (all three of them) couldn't work out they were being fucked with. Oh yeah, he's here... you can't see him? Should be around there... no wait he's over here now. Wait now he's behind you! NOW HE'S INSIDE THE HOUSE! :lol:

Yeah, those dudes were amazingly ineffectual for people who were supposed to deal with crazy paranormal shit. ("huh, there's blood all over the walls and ceiling in this room, and only bones remain of the people who ran in here. must be some bioweapon, not...y'know, the crazy psychic ghost shit we've been dealing with from the start.")

That really struck me, actually. I expected FEAR to be a game about supernatural shit and a bunch of well armed investigators getting screwed around with by ghosts in wells. What I got was a superhuman twitch protagonist fighting against clone supersoldiers with rayguns.

I mean, there's nothing actually wrong with that as such, but given I was actually expecting something out of FEAR, it was something of a personal peeve.

Frankly, the impression I got from the game (intratextually) was that 'FEAR' was a blind. It didn't exist, it was only there to get FEAR guy into the right place. They borrowed someone else's briefing room, and the best you ever saw was A GUY IN HIS CAR WITH A LAPTOP. Delivered to the scene BY THE BOSS IN HIS SEDAN and given A PISTOL of a sort you'd find lying around on OFFICE DESKS. :D

I loved how he never reported anything, though. The old guy is all 'hmm, strange readings', but there's no 'yeah this ghost is trying to kill me and someone keeps turning out the lights' button. ZOMG ZOMBIE JANKOWSKI that nobody cares about. Sometimes his scripting breaks too and you can walk right up to him! :) You send laptop info about 'waste water' and 'strange bases' but never say 'holy shit scary girl, I'm getting these visions, ps the intro means it's obvious my mum is trying to kill me'. :lol:

It simply TERRIFIES me that you appear to be saying that HL2 created the standard for non-linear gameplay. FPS has always been linear at it has NEVER been good. Doom3 was just a standard corridor stroller with a somewhat effective mood... but it kept doing the same bland shit for six hours or however long it took to stroll from one end to the other. It's entire selling point was 'wow looks good', and it sure did at the time. It's just boring and ordinary now. Still better than FEAR, because the objective for 90% of the game wasn't 'get Fettle'. :)
That's not what I intended to say; it's just that HL2 gets a whole lot of masturbation in reviewer circles as some sort of hugely innovative experience, and I wanted to illustrate that Doom 3 was an entirely acceptable game by the standards of its time.

Yeah I know man, it's just first thing in the morning. :) When it came out, linearity was certainly not a serious complaint (any more than for 90% of shooters at the time). iD just didn't have the Valve fanboy squad to convince the world their game was awesome.
