A saviour pod is rather different than a drop pod. A drop pod is the future version of an Apollo re-entry vehicle, which you use for landing amongst your enemies.

The saviour pod in Death or Glory, IIRC, is more like a one use space shuttle.

Saviour pods seem largely to just be a kind of ejection/escape pod.

This is why I love 40k :)
Well, technically, that sort of stuff will happen regardless when you have any sort of hypervelocity (or hypersonic, or even supersonic) impact of sufficient mass occur. Hell, even the retro thrusters probably will do some damage on descent if they're fired close to the ground. In the Blood Angels novels they had drop pods physically crashing through the sides of BUILDINGS undamaged.
