This was actually a satire story by the Onion six months ago, but now WSJ is printing it as a real story, fucking idiots

After the madness set off by my John Edwards-National Enquirer story (No. 1 on BuzzTracker as I write this), this is the perfect MSM-related story to end the week on: A fantastically ill-advised trend piece ran in the Wall Street Journal today with the headline, "Is Obama Too Physically Fit to Be President?" Wait, it gets better. If you're a regular viewer of the Onion News Network, you know where I'm going with this.

The story asks this vital question of the day: "In a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them."

Forget the fact that President Bush — a workout freak also well within normal body weight — is mentioned nowhere in the story. Forget that in a poll accompanying the story on the WSJ's web site, readers rejected by an amusingly large margin the story's premise and Fox News-y tone ("some people say"). Here's the very best part. The story was deconstructed six months ago on the Onion News Network when it appeared as a parody! Take a look.

Damn him, damn him for wanting to stay fit and healthy. He thinks he's so better than us for not wanting eat himself to an early grave by going to McDonalds everyday. I don't see why this is any more preposterous than what happened to Al "too intellectual to be President" Gore. Just think about how utterly insane it is to declare that someone is too smart or too literate to be President. Declaring that someone is too physically fit to be President seems perfectly reasonable in comparison.

On the other hand, Americans possitively worship sports and movie stars, who are by and large in very good shape. Intellectuals, meanwhile, are treated with derision as being out touch with true American values, despite it being intellectuals who keep the dammed place running.

I give Obama himself and his campaign a benefit of a doubt, he is after all a politician and could turn into a US Tony Blair of sorts, but some of the comments made about him on Spacebattles.com are really paranoid and bizarre (although to be fair a anti-Obama troll got booted off of there).

Of course, because Middle America uses the word "intellectual" almost exactly the same way that Karl Marx used the word "bourgeoisie", and with many of the same misconceptions. Pretty ironic when you think about it, considering their hatred of Marxism. Of course, they don't know what it is that they hate, since almost none of them know anything about Marxism. I wonder if they'd be shocked to find out how many of their beliefs are actually quite consistent with what Karl Marx said.
