You kidding? Crysis is the best shooter I've ever played; Warhead was just as good, even better with the tweaks.

Quite frankly, Crysis is the benchmark by which I'll be judging Far Cry 2 along with any other games I'll end up getting. It seriously raised my expectations and desires in regards to shooters.

I preordered Far Cry 2 and I am totally pissed I haven't got yet; I'm dying to check out the size of the map and open ended gameplay.

Yeah, and don't forget to complain that it's not open-ended enough (even though Crysis was totally linear and took place in corridors, lol).

It's pretty sad your standards were so low as to be appreciably raised by Crysis. Pretty much the only thing it did to benefit the genre was having a superpowered character that ACTUALLY HAD SUPERPOWERS, a big step up from Master 'oh he can do all this stuff in novels but ingame he's just a regular shooter man' Chief. Of course, Warhead was better by focusing the game more on this fun element rather than the fake exploration and retardedly easy combat vs regular guys.

If half of what they've promised for Far Cry 2 is true, I'll be very happy with the open ended play, graphics and engine.

One of the things I'm seriously looking forward to is just exploring the damn game...missions are actually kind of secondary.

My only complaint so far about Far Cry 2 is, from one preview I saw, it still uses the 'run over weapons to pick them up' system...I hate that.
It's pretty sad your standards were so low as to be appreciably raised by Crysis.
The heaviest game I was playing prior to Crysis was Battlefield 2 and an expansion of it.

That among other things, particularily the jaw dropping graphics. No shit, my first couple of times playing through Crysis, I'd literally stop playing and just check out the damn beauty of the engine...I actually sat and watched the sunrise near the beginng more than once.
Of course, Warhead was better by focusing the game more on this fun element rather than the fake exploration and retardedly easy combat vs regular guys.
I honestly didn't see all that much difference between Crysis and Warhead...I certainly noticed the engine tweaks and improved MP though.

The structure of Warhead vs Crysis is much different; Warhead is closer to a simple superpowered shooter, which is good - Crysis spends a lot of time trying to trick you into thinking there's a vast play area and choice (and vehicles with zero traction). :)

I've never understood the admiration for Crysis's graphics, however. It looks... like a modern shooter. It's an inefficient engine with some really, really bad textures in there; UE3.0 kicks the shit out of it and runs on weaker computers. Ironically, the whole 'zomg is good' thing is, I think, largely a result of all the wasted time and effort on pretending to be flexible and open with spacious bays and islets everywhere that do nothing but contain a setpiece battle and a few minutes of walking or seconds of driving.

Now I'm seriously considering getting this now, based on the appraisal it's getting here, although I'm still squeamish on the issue of price, because I have Fallout 3/Fable II to consider as well.

I'm not going to have a computer capable of running Crysis for a long, long time, and story isn't exactly important for me (you want a good story in a shooter? Play No One Lives Forever and maybe Half-Life). Basically, so long as its fun, replayable (i.e. varied enough and/or long enough) I'll be satisfied.

Well I finally got to play and yeah, its pretty damn good. The combat and atmosphere is very Black Hng awk Down.

complaints; slow paced at the start maybe this changes, the down time is maye just a tad too much, more like an RPG like Oblivion than an FPS in this regard.

Bloody beautiful graphics though.

Having only been able to play the intro-drive a few times due to computer problems I've only noticed one thing that's nifty.
Which character you pick actually changes you're model and you can actually see that. It's the nice little details like the celtic swirls on the Northen Irish guys hands that are cool.

Either the pills will be easy to stockpile, thus making the concept an exercise in 'press the pill button to make the annoying graphic effect go away, but no real threat', or they will be scarce as fuck, making the game incredibly frustrating. Bear in mind that I haven't played long enough to gauge this yet though.
From what I've heard, running out of malaria pills means going on a simple mission to get more, though the more notorious you are, the harder it will be to get medication. What's the largest amount of pills you've carried?

So far, I haven't had the opportunity to play for more than a couple of hours total, so I haven't run out. In fact, i've only had to use one pill so far. I'll have more time this afternoon to explore it further, being stuck at work isn't conducive to gaming. :D

The malaria thing seems like a clear attempt to limit sandbox inflation - that tendency for 'open' games to become much easier over time as you increase in resources. STALKER suffers greatly from this (the game being awesome, hard and fun at the start when you've got a PMm and a shotgun and utterly boring once you get a decent rifle) and I imagine they're trying to limit this effect, particularly since the 'get pills' stuff gets harder as you progress through the game. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but keeping a bit of linear-game 'push' or pressure on the player in a sandbox game is an interesting idea.

Granted it only works that way for ammo, and ammo within a certain class of weapon (fire, explosive, pistol, rifle) is oddly interchangeable.

Gotta watch out for accidental fires started by the backblast of the C.Gustov. I nearly died once when I fired it with an stack of ammo right behind me.

It shows some console-itis which is my main complaint. too much texture and geometry pop-in for a PC title, some strange limits on the control customization and the shadows especially are wacky, showing as shimmery diamonds until you get close enough for them to conspicuously switch over to full shadows.

What hardware you running? I hadn't noticed anything like that on my 8600.

Though I did notice the console-itis with the combat; no lean, prone or weapons customization.

The destroyable buildings added a nice feature (although a bit under-used). I was a bit let down by having to play in a jungle again (Far Cry and Just Cause still fresh in my memory). The fact you're now in an African landscape was one of the main draws to Far Cry 2.

I'm still sitting on the fence weather I buy the PC or the Xbox-version.

If your worried about whether your PC is up to the task then dont, it really does run better than Crysis.

My 8600 drives Far Cry 2 at 1280*1024 with 2AA and all settings at the default mids and the game still looks like jesus.

Tried to get this game running all day. I'm suffering the so-called "blank screen" bug - the fixes mooted around the net (no official tech support, nice, assholes) all don't work for me.

Basically, the opening videos run just fine, then it gets to the opening flash screen, which I assume says "press any key" or something to that effect- except what's meant to be text is just a bunch of untextured black squares. Pushing the key makes the screen blank. Repeated pushing of the enter key eventually gets you to the game, where I can sorta tell you're in the back of a jeep, except that everything is just black untextured shit (except for a whitish sky).

I've gotten the latest ATI drivers (for my Radeon HD4780), the Hotfix for Far Cry 2 after that, and then tried fucking around with the gameprofile.xml which you can change the settings from. All to no avail.

I hear building physics = graphics? If one of the 'main draws' for a game is something as inconsequential as the colour of the ground, I'm beginning to understand why you have such terrible taste. Note to the audience - there are jungles in Africa. ZOMG!

This obviously comes down to how competitive your PC is; an 8600 runs it fine, a 260 runs it everything maxed no problem.

Since the malaria is supposed to strike ever 30 to 40 minutes (real time), it shouldn't be much of a problem unless you spend a long period of time without any pills.

:wanker:

Yes, I happen to find a game in an original setting to catch my interest. Can't think of too many shooters that dropped you in a savanna before.

Finally got the game working. It's really fun, but the graphics aren't nearly as nice as Crysis, IMO.

Agreed, Crysis still wins easily with the graphics; mind you, don't get me wrong, Far Cry 2 is a very good looking game.

I've played it for a couple of hours so far, and my biggest complaints (not critically) are as follows:

-No prone feature, this has thrown me off a couple of times.
-The duck feature is a toggle key...I appreciate that idea and agree with it's availability, but I would have preferred it as a option of making it a toggle key or not.
-You can run over ammunition to pick it up, which detracts from their realism stance. Crysis has spoiled me with the "grab it yourself" system.
-The glowing weapons also detracts from the reality of the game; they have a HUD system for doors and interacting with the world, they should've stuck to that when spotting weapons on the ground like Crysis.
-The buses were something I was looking forward to, but then I was surprised to find the game does have a loading feature to jump you to another part of the map. A big disappointment there honestly.

Probably a couple of other nitpicks on my part, but nevertheless a very enjoyable game so far.

No, I was expecting a bus to physically drive me there, not me magically appear there after a loading period. After all, I can walk and drive to any location without the loading screen, I expected an actual bus ride with the same result.

Oh, because it's so much fun to sit on a bus and slowly rumble down the dirt roads. Maybe watch a few zebras go by the window.
