Re: Stats of a Battlestar (Spoilers of course for show)
Galactica may not have had armor because it was 'restored' or converted to original specs for her class. Like how you can go see an historic USN ship that won't have more modern equipment, because its all part of an effort to make it look authentic.
Just my guess, though.

Razor flashback 1 (Mild nudity and such, NSFW).StarshipTitanic wrote:None as far as I know. Of course, that could be considered a goof. There's also a shot in the film where they use stock 'Galactica gets drubbed' footage for Columbia, and I don't think anyone's suggesting that the extra armour is Voyager-style batmobile stuff, and that its paint actually changes between blue and red during the battle. I'd always assumed one of the fully-armoured ships with Columbia in that shot was meant to be Galactica.

I doubt it. Galactica was one of the original twelve battlestars according to Doraal. And considering it represented the capital world of Caprica, its likely to be the last of them built. And there was wrecks of galactica type battlestars seen in the miniseries. So there were others still is service fighting the Cylon attack.Alyeska wrote:Galactica was the last of its class to be in service. This indicates it is the youngest of its class.

Re: Stats of a Battlestar (Spoilers of course for show)
So the answer to my original question is: "No, there isn't." Frankly, I don't think the Columbia pictures prove a damn thing except that other battlestars had different armor layouts. It makes no logical sense to remove Galactica's armor for decommissioning (especially in such a haphazard way), there are gun mounts between the ribs, we see other battlestars with the same appearance, there's no mention of it anywhere in the canon, and RDM has never said anything of the kind in a podcast.

I would imagine one of the things he is referring to is that you do little or no citation of your actual sources or references for one thing (the supposed "armor" bit, which RedImperator asked about, or the scaling, which just looking on this "wiki", gives no citation for or whether it actually conforms to on-screen evidence.)MKSheppard wrote:Care to contribute anything but cheap sniping from the peanut gallery, Ender?Ender wrote:this thread is like a case study in how NOT to analyze scifi.

Galactica was about a mile long in oBSG, as stated by Larson and Dykstra, and that the nBSG version is very close to that length.Connor MacLeod wrote:I would imagine one of the things he is referring to is that you do little or no citation of your actual sources or references for one thing (the supposed "armor" bit, which RedImperator asked about, or the scaling, which just looking on this "wiki", gives no citation for or whether it actually conforms to on-screen evidence.)
Checking the 3D renders that were released onto the internet by ZOIC Studios, the FX company for BSG; you can get a nice copy HERE, and checking the scaling on those, assuming a 1,400~ m length for the battlestar gives me the rough numbers that I used for width and height for calculating the total volume of Galactica.
I don't have time to go through my two seasons' worth of DVDs of nBSG looking for those perfect shots to do scaling from; this entire thread got started because I was checking my "Water" DVD after noticing on BSGWiki that it's where you can see "Battlestar Group 75" mentioned on screen -- then I noticed that Baltar laid out specific numbers for the fleet's requirements later in that scene, and that on the same poster which shows Battlestar Group 75, it lists the water capacity of those tanks in "JPs".

Re: Stats of a Battlestar (Spoilers of course for show)
Have you actually tried scaling it IN the show to see if those match up? Its all well and good for the behind the scenes material to release all this in terms of intention, but that doestn necceesarily mean it fits what is onscreen. B5 had that major problem too (there were "unofficial" chartts that conflicted with onscreen scaling sand stated evidence but it was considered "official" because it was from the production crews.)MKSheppard wrote:Galactica was about a mile long in oBSG, as stated by Larson and Dykstra, and that the nBSG version is very close to that length.Connor MacLeod wrote:I would imagine one of the things he is referring to is that you do little or no citation of your actual sources or references for one thing (the supposed "armor" bit, which RedImperator asked about, or the scaling, which just looking on this "wiki", gives no citation for or whether it actually conforms to on-screen evidence.)

Which is why I presume Ender said what he said. You can't just "assume" things work in a quick and dirty method. That's what too many idiots try to do with analysis and it never works.I don't have time to go through my two seasons' worth of DVDs of nBSG looking for those perfect shots to do scaling from; this entire thread got started because I was checking my "Water" DVD after noticing on BSGWiki that it's where you can see "Battlestar Group 75" mentioned on screen -- then I noticed that Baltar laid out specific numbers for the fleet's requirements later in that scene, and that on the same poster which shows Battlestar Group 75, it lists the water capacity of those tanks in "JPs".

And, so, therefor?Crazedwraith wrote:I doubt it. Galactica was one of the original twelve battlestars according to Doraal.Alyeska wrote:Galactica was the last of its class to be in service. This indicates it is the youngest of its class.
Yes, I already said this. Galactica is the youngest. And considering it represented the capital world of Caprica, its likely to be the last of them built.
We see wrecks that resemble the class of Galactica, but we see they have extensive damage and cannot see all of the ship. The US Navy reuses the same hull design from time to time but builds new classes of ship out of it. Spruance and Ticonderoga share the same hull design, but have a different super structure. We see wrecks that superficially resemble the Galactica. They could be evolved designs built near the end of the war or after the war, they could share a passing familiarity. Galactica was strongly indicated to be the last of its class still in service. And there was wrecks of galactica type battlestars seen in the miniseries. So there were others still is service fighting the Cylon attack.

The fact that it was the last in service doesn't mean it was the youngest.Crazedwraith wrote:I doubt it. Galactica was one of the original twelve battlestars according to Doraal. To use US Aircraft Carriers as a counter-point:
Essex-class - lead ship of the class was the last retired.
Kitty Hawk-Class - lead ship the last retried
Submarines
A number of Los Angeles-Class submarines have been retired, but not the lead ship of her class, which remains active.
In some cases the final ship, in the case of US aircraft carriers was a ship flat in the middle of the production run. Retiring a warship doesn't always mean it was just built last, but time of last upgrade, condition of the ship, what type of wear-and-tear it has been through. In many cases I suspect the prototype may be superior, as it needs to undergo closer scrutiny and may even take longer to build.
Wraith, I'm assuming you made a type and met as it represented Caprica, it was then the oldest.

One thing no one's mentioned in relation to the "armor" issue (necro, I know, whatever, it's something new) - in Razor there's a Galactica-type Battlestar at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards - it's identical to Galactica. We see the same from a different destroyed Galactica-type Battlestar in the miniseries.

Re: Stats of a Battlestar (Spoilers of course for show)
Perhaps the Colonials were doing something like what the Brits have done with their various escort classes. For example there were the Leander class in which you had the broad beam series, or the Type 42 with later batches being longer as a result of lessons from the Falakland's war and general sea going experience, same principle with the Type 22 frigates, the first batch had no gun, the others did.Vympel wrote:One thing no one's mentioned in relation to the "armor" issue (necro, I know, whatever, it's something new) - in Razor there's a Galactica-type Battlestar at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards - it's identical to Galactica.
