It's not a perfect example, though I like the design, but the Squid features something of what Stark is talking about.

Eliminate the fucking wing heavy guns. There just isn't enough room for a heavy turret with it's assorted equipment, much less one on BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE WING

I would ditch the cranked-delta design of the wings too. A single slope [with missile tubes?] like at the front would look better.

Also, get rid of the heavy gun above the engine areas.

Im not sure how to incorporate the sloped mounting surface on the ship without totally redesigning it. And where would you suggest I actually put a hangar.

I can't tell whether or not they're superfiring from this angle. Do you have an orthographic front view?

EDIT: Also, your "wings" are blocking the line of fire for most of your guns. I'd say spread them out a bit more.

The front view is perspective only, but I'm pretty sure they clear each other's firing arc.

Is there a role for the small guns? Unless the big turrets are slow to traverse or inaccurate, it's probably best to spend that mass elsewhere. If they're for smaller targets, mounting them on the sloped upper sides (instead of on 'horizontal' platforms) would improve their coverage. However, the guns themselves appear to be almost the same size - you might be best to emphasize their role by making the primary turrets carry obviously larger weapons. If they really ARE the same weapons (or similar), remove them entirely and change the primary turrets to bigger guns instead. One hit with giant gun > 5 hits with smaller guns.

As to hangars, they're super dangerous. Unless it's a carrier keep it small and on the facing the ship will angle away from combat (on this design then, the rear). The upper and lower sloped areas down toward the engines might be a good surface for the entrance, but keep the apeture small and remember battleships don't carry piles of small craft without seriously compromising their primary role. If you're only carrying 2-3 consider external carriage on (recessed) docking points instead of enclosed hangers full of exploding fueltanks and wasted volume.

 First of all, stop listening to all the Starship Design Engineers in this thread and make what you like and looks cool. It is not up to you to make what people like, it is up to you to make what you like. Don't worry, if you do anything with these designs in the future, the nerds that like it will take whatever you make and find reasons and explanations for it.

Second, the new ship would look better IMO, if you filled in the holes in the wings. Maybe something that connects the main hull and the outer pylons. It will give it a beefier look.

I also like the hanger in the front of the one ship. It looks cool and y'know, if "OMGZ A HANGER!! IT'S A WEAK POINT!!" really bugs you, you can always say it has shielding or give it a closing door.

Look I didn't finish my graduate course in starship design to be ignored by ARTISTS!

Frankly I'd keep everything even remotely important out of the front of the ship, since it's generally the thinnest and most likely to be exploded/broken off/eaten by giant moles/etc.

Damn right! I did not spend six years of my life getting a Doctorate from Bob Johns University in Contemporary Imperial Spacecraft construction to be brushed aside by plebeians who wouldn't know a Zero Point Energy Drive from a Hydroponics Waste reclamation system!

On another note hangers. Carrier's by design are at their heart... big metal boxes with lots of internal space left empty so you can do things like load, launch, retrieve and repair small craft. Be they Anti-Submarine Patrol craft or Space Superiority fighters you need lots of empty space to do that sort of thing. Either you go one of three ways, one purpose built, two general purpose, or three support.

By that I mean, a purpose built Carrier is just that, a carrier, it carries around many smaller craft and repairs them and when the action gets hot, it gets the hell out of there. It should not be coated with weaponry, because it's weapons are it's fighters and bombers and recon birds. Any modern real nuclear carrier is like this. Then you have general purpose craft like your Star Destroyer's, jack of all trades, they have heavy guns but not ton of craft. Just enough to get by with whatever their stated mission is, or enough to be useful and little more. The third type is your support, any modern cruiser or destroyer which carries a helicopter aboard could be said to be a support type if it regular uses said craft to aid it in it's own mission.

Thanks for that Havok. It is actually not an issue though mainly because I am doing this out of sheer boredom and perhaps someone will spark an interesting idea. And concerning the big guns, I think I'll redesign then so they at least look like they are a larger caliber weapon. The small turrets are for point defense.

I actually really liked your Revision 1 of the old design, alongside the carrier. Looked like ships meant to go together, a carrier and an escort for some nifty scifi setting.

Okay, I redesigned the large KEW turret to make it a much larger caliber than the point defense guns:

looks like you are going to have to raise your second large cannon, doesnt seem to have a clear shot over the first cannon.

And on the bottom either make the second cannon closer to the hull or push the third one further from the hull...

Two birds.....uh....two stones:

So, other than gun placement, anyone have any critique to impart as to the design itself???

That station is becoming damn sweet.
I recomend learning Blender and texturing it. These ships and the station could be real knock outs with good texturing.
