Free trial eh? I guess I'll take advantage of this. What should I know as a total utter noob?

there are 999999999 spies right now after the update so basically just shoot everyone, teammate or not and you'll probably kill half of them because they're spies
Seriously. Pick Pyro or Soldier or something and just unload everything you have on every 'teammate' you run across.

You know, it'd probably be interesting to have an all-Spy game with friendly fire turned on.
Whoever gets the least negative score wins.

Actually, that would empower pyros even more, as currently their flames still don't teamwound.

all-Spy game
So I played for a while today, found out that I don't completely suck, and hey, the game is only ten bucks? I might just buy it...

I tried it, but it can't even get started. When it gets to the "Powered by Source" screen, it just crashes.

Right, current issues with the game:
* The Ambasador can shoot through thin walls, like the grates at the start of most maps.
* The Ambasador hits well outside the hitboxes, though it doesn't register headshots there.
* The Ambasador seems to suffer from very, very little CoF spread.
* Spy's knife kill taunt can be done cloaked/disguised while breaking neither. Has a sizeable AoE kill.
* Jarate, to my system the one time I got hit with it, was bugged and completely opaque. Appearing as a dark brown 'no texture' tiling over my entire screen.

The Ambassador was DESIGNED for accuracy, so the 'very, very little CoF spread' is an asset, not a drawback.

According to the latest TF2 blog entry, the reason people are finding duplicate items is so that people can trade them as part of a future addition.

It's draw back is that that accuracy is for the first shot. Otherwise, you've got exactly the same pistol, only more accurate, piercing, and capable of head shots.

Ok, going back it looks like it fires at about half the speed.
Which is an alright trade off for the accuracy. Though the other issues still stand.

Well let's see, there are numerous bugs that mask characters as other characters, making it so I'm shot with a sniper rifle by a scout. Awesome. Then there's the retarded new system for unlocks. I thought achievements were bad, but no, this is WORSE. I've been playing for maybe eight hours now, and I've only gotten one unlock, and in Valve's awesomeness, it's one I already have. Hey, that's useful, right? Because I can TOTALLY trade with someone for one I don't have. Oh wait, it's a duplicate of the Axtinguisher, one almost everyone has, and oh yeah, the trading system isn't active yet. That's coming "later".
On the one hand, yeah, it's nice to get unlocks for characters you're not even playing. In theory, that should keep people from playing nothing but the freshly updated classes, but no, it really doesn't. So Snipers are now constantly maxed out on every server I go to, by of course the asstards who can't fucking snipe.
Oh but wait, it gets better! You can SPECTATE and get unlocks. What a wonderful system this is. It's like EVE, only I have to stay logged IN to not do anything and have a small percentile chance of getting what I want.
I'm actually having LESS fun playing TF2 now than ever before, which is sad, because I really liked the game. A pity Valve had to listen to this asstarded "Achievement servers RUIN MY GAME!". I didn't give a shit about the achievement servers I got mine the old fashioned way, but now with this new system, I'm beginning to wish I DID go to those servers.
Welcome to World of Team Fortress guys.
PS- I love how they said there was a bug last night that kept the loot drop from working right, but hey, the only way to tell is to play the game for a few hours and hope you get your random drop.

Okay, so the fact that that they have gotten rid of grinding for all the best gear has made it MORE like World of Warcraft? Get your panties out of a bunch dude, yes the update was rather buggy, they've already patched it, and I'm sure they'll patch it more. The whole idea about this new method for unlocking is so that people can still be PLAYING THE GAME. Rather then almost every server shut down because everyone is GRINDING ACHIEVEMENTS.
I've always been excited when a update comes out, but seriously the game is unplayable for 2 or 3 days because everyone is trying to get the new weapons. Now from what I've heard from my clan, it was a very nice update because there was a huge influx of players because of the update, but everyone was just playing, not trying to get the new weapons or all playing as the updated class except for when they've been asked to be another class so they can get killed for a specific achievement.

They got rid of the grinding? Oh that's fucking hilarious. They replaced one method of grinding (Achievements) with another that's even MORE annoying (random drops based on TIME PLAYED). The old method could be completely ignored by going to an achievement server and playing for all of twenty minutes. Now you have to play for week after week for the CHANCE that maybe you'll get the drops you want. Never mind that people are STILL spamming up the two updated classes as they get the gear, or are just achievement whoring, so really nothing has changed because the game is still unplayable because EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER is spamming the shit out of Spy and Sniper, just like has happened in every other fucking update. Only now, instead of everyone spamming the class to get the achievements and new unlocks, it's all random. Yeah, that's shit tons better.
Grinding playtime for random fucking drops is much worse than grinding achievements by FAR. At least with achievements you have a goal and a way to get there. Now I have to play for weeks for the off chance that maybe, MAYBE I'll get the stuff I want.

I've gotten two items. Natasha, and Natasha. And I've played for... 6 hours?
Incidentally, what are your usernames? I'm just Hawkwings.

My username is comradeda.
I've gotten 3 sandviches, a flaregun, an axtinguisher, and the Cloak and Dagger.
I left the game on overnight, and ended up with another axtinguisher. If you feel like doing that (it is rather cheap, I guess), make a server that has the timeout time at 0 (infinite) sv_lan 0 and sv_pure 1. It's really dumb that that works.

Horray for new grinding!
Speaking of Grinding, to back up Hotfoot
Old Team Fortress 2 had World of Warcraft grinding, do thing X times and get X reward.
New Team Fortress has new and improved! Ever quest grinding, which is to say, do thing X(Play) for Y(Time) and there's a Z(random chance) that you'll get the reward your playing for.
So that's the improved model, you still have to jump through hoops, only now there's a chance your hoop jumping was for nothing.
For example my Scout update consisted of grinding out the achievements to get the items, then playing around with the old VS new weapons and deciding on my preferred loadout for defense/attack/payload maps. On Payload for example on attack I use the normal scattergun, the uber-sodacan and the normal bat. On defense, Force of nature shotgun, pistol and bat+ball to pop ubers.
And I was once again playing the game again and kept playing for about two weeks, then I lost interest again until the next update. This update would have likely been the same but considering the frustrating nature of getting the new content I will consider a Eve online style personal server in hopes I wake up to the new content I can try.

Watch, they'll patch the idle/personal server gaining of weapons because that wasn't intended either and it "ruins the experience" that Valve wants us to have.
Fuck that noise. Call of Duty 4/World at War's unlock system is infinitely preferable to this bullshit.

The low drop rate is apparently an error which Valve isn't sure the cause of yet.
The Ambassador's bugs have been fixed - it was using the pyro cone of fire, supposedly, explaining its ability to miss and still hit, the gate passing, and the fact that it could shoot through several people at once. The result is that the Ambassador is a shit weapon even worse than the standard revolver - the only bonus is that the initial shot is highly accurate. Expect that to be patched.
The bug where classes can equip weapons not belonging to them is still occuring. Valve seems to somehow bring this one up again every single update.
The piss jar making you see an opaque brown screen was apparently some directX 8 related thing. If I recall, they've fixed that now.

Haha. At least I don't have to actively do anything. I can earn unlocks at work. Actually, it's rather like torrenting. Start torrents when I leave home, start TF2 unlock grinding server too.
But yeah, that system 'works'.
I'd much rather they just had this content available, rather than giving it to us randomly.
