A regular user can still do damage in an XP system, simply by installing piles of garbage that fattens up the registry until it teeters and totters of its own bloated weight or deleting whatever files they have write-access to (if XP is like 2k, then not everything is locked down tight). If you want true segregation, go with two OS's.

Now, install Win XP Pro on C:. You can switch between the two partitions by simply changing the active partition (can be done with a simple batch file if you have Partition Magic's command-line utility or handled with a boot-sector menu by XOSL). Each OS will think it's on C:. XP Pro will be able to see the Win98 partition as D: but Win98 won't be able to see XP Pro because Win98 can't see NTFS, so you'll be secured.

Yeah, that's a good point. Technically it's possible for anyone to take a seemingly innocuous action and kill a Windows computer because of the nature of Windows. Whenever you install anything on a Windows box, you're running the risk of serious unforeseen problems.

All the more reason to have separate OS's.

Ok, lets use a linux boot disk with NTFS support or the other various boot disks for accessing NTFS.

You need to also disable boot from floppy too and lock the bios with a password. Also hope your bios does not have a generic password.

AVG Antivirus. Go to http://www.grisoft.com for more information. Automated updates and everything. I use it on all my machines, without a hitch. And yes, it's free. The serial number they send you via E-mail is the same for everyone; they just want an excuse to ask for your E-mail :)

Shep, I feel your pain: the very first night our family got our first computer, my younger brother ran FDISK "to find out what it did." My very first experience with DOS 5.0 was trying to figure out what he'd done so I could fix it, with my dad standing over my shoulder yelling "is it working yet?" Ironically enough, my brother went on to become a computer science major. Me, I learned never to "upgrade" a damn thing unless I absolutely have to in order to play a new game.

My little sister, my aunt's two kids, & my first brother in law are/were hackers. I am the ex-hacker turned IT, for a while. Part of my stress factor, was the "Free" work I kept having to do close to home....

Have you ever tried to secure a computer from someone whose almost as good as you are, while still making it accessable to the computer illiterates?
