I agree strict liability for an offence like this is retarded and it should be kept for minor things like speeding. What I'm surprised by is that he was prosecuted. The CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) is meant to decide whether people should be and a part of that is explicitly based on the public interest with IIRC the main counterbalance being the interests of victims i.e. is it in the public interest to prosecute and if not should we do it anyway because of the poor victims. This was clearly not something that had any victims and it's also clearly not in the public interest.
