As I remember from the STNG technical manual. Phasers can excite lower density mass
into an "out of phase" state. So basically it breaks material bonds and then tidily sweeps
via warp physics (the phase part in Phaser) all those horrible secondary effects randomly up
and/or down the "phase spectrum". So if the errant matter ever does relax back into normal
phase it will do so in scattered pattern accross the chronometric landscape. It is the
time/space version of sweeping all that heat, radiation, and science under the rug.

That may not be a perfect explanation but it's been approximately 17 years since I read
that book.

It's also irrelevant as that book has no canonicity whatsoever. I also says no such thing. It attributes the phaser 'glow funnily and go away' effect to the 'Nuclear Disruption Force' without ever actually explaining what that IS.
Just for laughs it theoretically gives a Type II a continuous fire endurance of 146 years. By that book's numbers, a single Type II power cell would allow a Type X phaser array to fire continuously for damn near 12 hours.

The OP asked for thoughts on how phasers work. You don't think it's possible for someone - hell, the dude might even actually like Star Trek - to be interested in what people on the production side might have thought about the topic? That's what the TM is, you know - it's basically "hey so here's how we figure it might (or might not) work" from some of the guys in the art department.


Sometimes dudes who like Star Trek are willing to include material that isn't part of the ~*~official canon policy~*~. It's shocking, I know.

Please note the stated anecdotal qualification of my initial input in the discussion.
Being snide or combative does not enhance your arguement.

I have found it amusing that as I get older and know more about higher science, the more
Star Trek has slid from 'science fiction' to 'science fantasy'. The "Phaser Disintegration Effect"
issue has been a major factor in that ongoing transition.
