Besides, I always got the feeling that Iserlohn and Geiresburg had an interdiction-field-thingy going on, but I'm probably wrong.

From the views of the galaxy, it appears that the main bulks of the Empire and Alliance are in two separate dense clusters (arms?) while the Phezzan and Iserlohn corridors are the only two lines of stars where the clusters meet. I got the impression that their FTL, whatever it is, only works well near stars for some reason, possibly supply line-based.

Also, is it me, or has the appearance of the battles been referenced/ripped off quite a few times in other Japanese media? The computer game episode of Haruhi comes to mind, as does the first level to Starfox Assault.

Yeah, with the exception of the opening/closing titles and the national anthems, I don't think there's a lick of music newer than 100 years old in the series. And for the most part it works very well, too.
I always thought it was neat how the overall look (and the rear fins especially) of the Alliance starships are present from the very biggest fleet flagships down to the Spartanian starfighters.

And that Haruhi ep was more an homage to two scifi series, one being Uuchu Senkan Yamato in ship and weapon style and the other one being Legend of the Galactic Heroes in 'wall 'o' ships shootin' stuff' tactics.

Ok, this is a minor point, but does anyone else notice that the particle cannons firing sound a lot like a lightsaber's 'pshew' start-up noise? Just a casual observation.

It was pretty obvious that Reinhard/ Alexander was going to lose his Patroklos, but I was nevertheless surprised when it happened. That's where the analogy seems to end though - his admirals are all competent and loyal, it seems. Mittermeyer is my favorite of them.
EDIT: of course it seems likely Oberstein orchestrated the assassination attempt with the precise intent of getting rid of Siegfried. But who knows.

I did just now. Even though I kind of had the feeling from the get go that ol' Sieg was going to get the axe at some point, knowing still didn't detract from the scene.
Anyway, I don't think Oberstein planned an elaborate plot to off Keirchis, it's not his style to take a risk as big as firing a grenade launcher at the man he seeks make Emperor. Sure, he'll do the immoral thing like that whole business with the nukes but he wouldn't endanger Reinhard, as evidenced by his attempt at being a human shield. He strikes me as a character who'll do whatever is necessary, but he won't take any unnecessary and showy risks.

I didn't know that was coming, so it was a complete surprise. As Kircheis was laying there cradled by Reinhard I was stunned. "He can't die now!" was the thought going through my mind through most of his dying scene. I knew there were... eighty-something episodes to go, so really. Quite gutsy to kill off such an important character so early, and even late into the series you'll see someone remark about how different things would be if only Siegfried had lived. It's a pivotal moment that completely alters what might have happened otherwise and effectively drives character arcs and even major plot points ever afterward, and it hit me pretty hard just in the moment itself.

...that and future battles like Vermillion (first LotGH battle I watched) was conspicuously lacking Siegfried Kircheis. I didn't really notice his absence until I realized what a big freaking deal he was to Reinhard, so I had my suspicions. Still surprised me that it happened so soon though, Reinhard clutches at that pendant of his for the rest of the series! Talk about continuity, the guy still offers tactical and emotional advice 80 or so episodes after he dies!

I didn't find the opening and closing numbers that bad, until the very last series of episodes. The opening song was done in competent English beforehand. Not great or anything, but at least it sounded like whoever was singing understood what the song said. Then abruptly the last opening song comes on, and it sounds like... well, drunken karaoke. Stiff, stilted, with a singer who obviously does not speak English and is winging it phonetically. I usually skipped over the songs anyway, but that was just painful.

The Hyperion is my favourite of the ships in this show so far. It's blocky and chunky like the rest of the Alliance ships but it manages to pull off that look very well.
I had to sit around the house for a while so I watched a bunch more of the show recently. The random history backstory dump episodes are always fun.
