For a free FPS there's also
Operation 7, which also uses in-game points + real-life money-turned-to-second-in-game-currency.
Not only does this have LEANING, which MW2 doesn't (

old story I know), but the main thing going for this is "build your own primary" -- each weapon consists of parts so you can choose optics or iron sights, barrel length, whether suppressed or not, and such. You get 20,000 points ("Gold") to start with, but if you don't buy anything for a primary you start with a Daewoo K2. Unlike Combat Arms (from the company behind Maple Story) all these weapons and parts are permanent and are not time-limited, but they too have a level requirement; the secondary currency lets you buy versions that have only a level 1 requirement.
*Beloves -- I know that's not a proper verb -- his EBR-bodied, DMR-barreled "Mk 14" with red dot*

FEAR's MP is still free, right?

Just learned this earlier. Mechwarrior 4 is free.

Will it work on mp though ? IIRC Microsoft dropped MW 4 multi support long time ago.

From what I've heard the MP works well. I'll be trying it myself later. I've heard some bad things about Mekteks front end however.

There seemed to be a temporary server malfunction. The game seems to work fine.

I know it's not a FPS, but have you played NETHACK already?
It's pretty damn entertaining.

You're right, the appeal is almost exactly the same!
Does anyone know if Savage 2 actually had botcode?

He requested free games, he never stated that he wanted exclusively FSPs -only that he had a preference for them. I never said that the appeal was the same, or that NH was similar to a FPS in any way. I just said that despite not being a FPS, it was entertaining.
Nice try, but sarcasm is a bit tricky. You will get the hang eventually.

Fuck off, cocksmack. Going by how many of the clunky strategy games he's gone after that have been mentioned (ps, zero) using the thread to just mention your pet clunky, ugly, deliberately backwards nerd pillar isn't smart or clever. Or useful.
We could all suggest he plays the free STALKER MP, but it's rubbish so doing so would be meaningless. If he's into Wolf he'd probably dig FEAR or nonsense like Gore; his unwillingness to sign up for stuff counts him out of things like Combat Arms.
Hey I got one; Star Control 2. Here's another; Warzone 2100. Wait - Freespace!

Yes, because I never miss a chance to promote what obviously is my pet game. Only wait, I don't! Also, note the lack of words such as "Awesome", "Great" or "BEST GAME EVAR!!!!1!!!"
I said "Entertaining". It's clunky, delibetadely backwards? Sure. But for a free game, it's ok.
If you don't like it, so fucking what? It's not like the topic is named "Free games to download?(THAT ARE NOT CONSIDERED CRAP BY STARK, 'CAUSE HE IS HARDCORE!!!)"

Come to think about it, a good singleplayer game would be welcomed too.
I tried Operation 7, but it said something-something not available for my region or something. FUCK.

People who will enjoy nethack will probably have already played it or heard of it once. It is pretty much the stellar example of a niche game.
Nethack is the LAST game I would recommend to someone. Its extremely hard to play and difficult to learn and not rewarding to anyone who is not still mentally stuck in the 80s. Recommending nethack when someone asks for a free game is like suggesting someone try the C compiler for TI-89 calculator when they ask for a beginners programming language.

There is a Soldat like game called Liero that is pretty fun, I prefer Liero Xtreme, but there are other good clones as well.

You like piloting giant mecha ? The Mechwarrior 4 : Mercenaries campaign is probably the best single player experience available for free right now I can think of. The link is dead at the moment I think from sheer number of people trying to download it after it was released recently. But it should be back up soon.
You like RTS ? Ground Control is a very fine game and an amazing single player RTS. In anticipation of Ground Control 2 it was released for free. Just google for it and the fileplanet link should be the first thing to come up. Be aware that you will need a fileplanet account to play it.
You like space fighters ? Try Freespace 2. Its a fucking pain in the ass to get due to clunky installer but worth it. I would say try playing the demo first. If you like then try getting the fullgame. You will not regret it if you like space sims. FS2s single player campaign is considered by many to be very memorable to this day.
And finally if you are a fatty nerd (tm) Aleph One (a remake of Marathon) is available for you.
But in general the best single player games and FPS ones in particular are not legally hosted anywhere. If you wanna play the good stuff there is option but to torrent or fork out absurd money for a few megabytes of data.

It is free. The company released the game and source code ages ago. But the nerds in charge of distributing it to the masses did not do a bang up job.
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.ph ... ace_2_Open
Behold ! An entire wiki article for installing a 12 year old game. Sometimes I think the FS 2 Open team is as much about bringing the game free to everyone as they are about masturbating over their 1337 coding skillz.
I guess I can be a fatty and play Marathon or something.
Marathon is what made Bungiee famous before they made Halo and essentially sold out. Graphically its from the Doom 2 era but the gameplay and story has a lot of depth.
http://source.bungie.org/index.php?title=Get_Marathon
Pretty simple and self explanatory. You get the Aleph One package first. Then get content packages for each of the three marathon games.

No, it isn't. Not even FS1 is. Source code released does not equal free (hello art assets, missions, etc.). However, FS2 is only 6 bucks at
gog.com, if you're willing to pay that much, Shroom. It is an excellent game, and there's a ton of very good campaigns that have been released over at HLP. And installing the SCP material really isn't very hard at all. Turey's Installer will even do pretty much all of it for you now, although it can be a little buggy (mostly oddly incomplete downloads of some things; just redoing it seems to fix most issues).

Yeah, you need to actually own the resources; only the SCP files are 'free'. That said, HLP has a proper installer now, so getting up and running is pretty easy. Getting mods from various versions to work is still a disaster, of course, but that's free software for you.
The best part about Sarevok being an idiot is that the wiki page is hell old (most of it's from 2008) and the very first paragraph says 'use the installer', which is the entire process. Turns out it isn't that hard at all; but then he thought SCP owned Freespace somehow, so...
