The ship is well known in museum and military circles and I would be astounded if it was just totally abandoned by god knows how many naval museums in the United States who already have the budgets to support fucking battleships. Then again, that might go back to the precious balance a lot of these museums operate on.
This is is becoming particularly irksome to me lately because Clinton just pledged $15 million to Poland for its preservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Not that it isn't a worthy cause for all kinds of reasons, but really, it's in Europe and I don't see why we are paying for a memorial in another country when we have concerns here.

I'm just hoping that as this nebulous "deadline" gets closer, someone steps forward and does the right thing. At this point, I'd be happy if Comcast (which has its headquarters in Philadelphia) funded the necessary work and painted a fucking Xfinity logo on Olympia's deck for its trouble.

That, or maybe I'll win the Powerball and buy myself a warship.

Steve Jobs could do it and call Olympia an "iProtected Cruiser" and I would be OK with that. Because he did, in fact, protect a cruiser in that case.

On a more serious note, Auschwitz preservation is more important to world history than Olympia is to world history, even I admit that. Whether that means that it makes sense for the US to send money that could preserve Olympia to make sure Auschwitz is adequately preserved... not an easy question for me.

Ideally, we should be able to both and much more besides.

Frankly, we can. It's just a frustration of mine.

Incidentally, my apologies to TimothyC for derailing his thread. It's just that both vessels happen to be fairly close together and the United States' story is moderately related to Olympia's. :)
