He's Australian, and Vidjagames there are rare and expensive luxuries that cost half as much again as everywhere else, even Rip-Off Britain. The ships that deliver them probably get eaten by sharks or something. Anyway, Bioshock was already the same game we played in 1999 when it was called System Shock 2, the distinction is the atmosphere evoked by the art design, and since 90% of the interest in a Shock game is exploring the environment (because the combat is sloppy and awkward and always has been), a radical change in environment can in fact produce qute a different experience.

Amusingly games are essentially free here.

Yes, there's the game store rental thing. Most places here have changed their returns policy to make it less useful (only offering like for like exchange or store credit for a return of an opened product, for instance)

Here they don't even care about steam-activated games and just send it to distributor as 'defective'.

Somehow I still have a pile of awful games though. :)

I just watched the trailer for Bioshock 3 (or infinite or whatever), and I gotta say I love how they spend a nice chunk of the start of it with the protagonists head in an aquarium so they can trick you into thinking its going to be underwater again.

And then they have the puppet-daddies running around outside at the edge of the screen so you have no idea what they would even look like, and the protagonist spends 90% of the trailer falling through the air and clutching onto stuff like Wily Coyote trying to avoid falling off a cliff, and its obviously a cutscene and not anything you will see during normal gameplay.

I played the first Bioshock, it was nice (and on sale). Didn't play the second because it was expensive and alot like the first one. I seriously doubt I'll play this one unless the actual gameplay videos look awesome enough and I suddenly get alot of money that I can't spend on something better.

Plus, what are they even using for plasmids? Are they using actual magic? Did the villain of this game discover a way to (literally) steal the hearts of the populace to animate his army of giant pinnochio monsters and uses magic to fly a giant armada of hot air balloons? Is patriotic fervor and the blessed stars and stripes supposed to make this mass of flying boats invisible to the eyes of non-americans? (btw, at the games site there is an actual picture of some guy dressed as Uncle Sam... I think he's supposed to be an enemy or something but I can't tell)

Anyway, it would be cool if in this game the messages were using those big vinal records, and you had to carry around a huge Phonograch on your shoulder so you can hear them, and all the messages were from Mike Nelson and his Robot Pals as they make witty comments about how absurd this setting is. And then you see a bunch of other NPC walking around picking up all the records laying around and playing back all the secret incriminating messages that people casually leave in public places... and they just toss garbage on the ground to explain why there is so much loot on the floor in these games.

We've already got Fallout New Vegas coming in a few months.

I don't think that the new place is supposed to be hidden. The developer said "Bioshock is more than just Rapture", clearly alluding that we are dealing with an alternative universe here.

As for what's the MagGuffin... does it really matter? It's all about mocking neo-conservatives, racism and bible-humping. We probably have some exotic plant or whatever.

Nah. He just probably carved up a black person's heart. We are talking about racists here.

So, you mean that instead of lighting up random palookas and upper-class freaks who've gone crazy as a result of abusing Plasmids, now I'll get to be lighting up Klansmen and rabid neonationalists with my fistfull o' lightning and finger-flick o' flame?

Oh, happy day! I bet those bedsheets burn reaaaaal nice. The only way the target-rich environment could get any more scene-chewing hammy is if they threw in Those Wacky Nazis for good measure.

I'm not gonna get this game until its on Steam for so cheap they're virtually paying me to buy it. I'm not seeing any increase in graphics quality - looks the same as the previous two games.

I thought it was kinda funny reading this thread and then this recent Kotaku article.
If BioShock Infinite debuts with a gameplay demo and a trailer that includes no Little Sisters, no Rapture, no — so far — apparent storyline connection to earlier BioShocks, is it really a BioShock game? Yes, its creator told Kotaku.

"It would be dishonest to say this is not BioShock," Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine told Kotaku in an interview last week, just a couple of hours after the game debuted before the gaming press in New York City.
(I can quote the entire article if somebody really wants me to, but it's kinda long and I felt this got the point across.)

The creators really think that people are going to see this game and get confused about what series it belongs to. Apparently they're concerned that making what looks like the same game only in the sky, and mocking American exceptionalism, is too drastic a change for Bioshock fans. :banghead: Yeah, I don't have a good feeling about this one either.

I expect to enjoy playing this game for the same reason I enjoyed Painkiller; absolutely destroying feel-good enemies in a variety of increasingly sadistic ways. I hope they upgrade the BEEEEEES ability this time around.

I never really found BEEEEEEEES all that much fun. Sure, it was kinda effective, and no denying, but it just grossed me out.

What I did like was shooting people in the face. With Lightning. And bullets. I also liked the plasmid that let you cloak; added a real slice of Alpha Protocol or Thief to BioShock. Sure, they may be mean and tough, but you've got a Tommy Gun or a Boomstick and you're unloading into the back of their dome from a meter away.

Cloaking, lightning and boomsticks were my bread and butter.

in Bioshock, I basically stuck with the Natural Camoflage, Security Bullseye plasmid, Electrobolt, and the crossbow.

Just zap anything hackable with an electrobolt to hack it, zap anything non-hackable with electrobolt to kill it, if I need to kill a big daddy then just hit it with a security bullseye when its either next to a camera or when I summon some bots by failing a hack. Crossbow kills anything I need to hit from a distance.

Though considering how I hacked pretty much every security device I came across, I think I really messed up Rapture for the horrible mutated inhabitants in it. I mean, every security camera I hacked will now send killer robots after anyone who isn't me. Same with the healing stations. Rapture would be a pretty crummy place for anyone trying to survive in there after I hacked it all.

Though that says something for their security systems, hacking the camera should not let people switch the alliance of the security robots being sent.

To be honest, the gross-out factor was what made me like it...that, and my love of swarm-type powers. (Guess who my favorite Naruto character always was?) Also, it's the only Plasmid power that does anything even remotely in its class. You're freaking creating life, man! Spawning off little obedient hornetty minions.

I never found the cloaking or bees very handy. Once I got the bolt gun and the rocket launcher most of the plasmids except for lightning and the deep freeze one were kinda useless.

You know, I went through the entire first game with only electro-bolt and the wrench. Never found it a challenge. The chemical thrower made the last boss laughable.

Once I made it a challenge by forcing myself to take out every Big Daddy while limiting myself to plasmids and the wrench but thanks to research I was powerful enough to beat them to death by the luxury apartments stage. I had to use the chemical thrower on Fontaine, though.

I just used the crossbow, then used telekinesis to keep pulling the bolt out and sticking it back in if things didn't die in one shot.

Very impressed with the trailer, creative viewpoint, and like the little trick at the start. I think the game will do well if it has more trailers like that to advertise the appeal to try out a bioshock based in the skies.

After seeing all the O'Niel space colony stuff and the Rama posts elsewhere in the forum I have a suddenly better idea of where Bishock 5 can let us shoot space hippies.

OAN art director interview
http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/bio ... 597p1.html
Not a sequel or a prequel, BioShock Infinite is set during the early 1900s, a time when America was beginning to find its footing on the global stage. A wealthy group decides to bring the budding nation's technology, art, culture, and politics to the world in style via the floating city of Columbia.

And then something goes horribly wrong, and Columbia transforms from a floating world's fair into a Death Star. The city ends up disappearing without a trace. And then one day, a stranger appears on the doorstep of the game's protagonist, Blake DeWitt. The former Pinkerton Agent turned gumshoe is offered a job: Find a girl trapped on Columbia and get her out. The stranger knows where Columbia is and how to get there. DeWitt accepts, and BioShock Infinite is off and running.

So how did Irrational go about creating the overall look and feel of the cloud city players will explore as DeWitt? It was a long process of starts and stops, Robertson said. Art Nouveau was the creative team's first focused effort, but given the mix of styles prevalent during the game's historical time frame, it didn't quite fit.

The team turned to research, leaning heavily on photographs of San Francisco taken before and after the devastating earthquake of 1906. Old Sears Roebuck catalogs became mandatory reading, and images and art from Chicago's famed White City built for the 1893 World's Fair proved the perfect match for Columbia.

"There's no stamp on style like Art Deco in Rapture," Robertson said. "Columbia has more of a basis in history, and it's meant to evoke turn of the century America."
