Thread ruined by yet more Vympel commander's cupola nonsense? :lol: You should see all the stuff the Abrams doesn't have (Stryker too). Its just funny that one guy has this level of interaction between units working (ie datalinked defences, data-sharing missiles, etc) when RTS developers can't do it. The shtora system (and other similar systems) are cool, and watching an Abrams shoot down ATGMs is hilarious stuff.

Played a 16 player match on Wake Island. Each side is stuck and not advancing as the new SAM and support dynamics decimate offensives before they can be launched.

Suddenly I get SIX fucking friendly nuke launch warnings as the two armour AI players who had been grinding the frontline decide "fuck this shit!"and nuclear carpet bomb the whole Russkie side of the island then roll in and spawn camp them into the living death.

Twas epic. I get the feeling that EWS and SAM micro will he very big against other players. Having to play a shell game 2 or 3 radar units so you don't get arty'd or HARM'dis something that will be necessary.

Breakthroughs are nuts - once someone pops your air defence net and gets some ground guys behind you, you are really vulnerable to all kinds of badness (air, cruise missiles, tac aid, etc). I'm not sure Vympel would like tanks shooting down stationary choppers, though. :)

A few other fun things - Patriot missiles "basket" launch. Lob them to where you suspect choppers are hiding and carnage ensues.

AAA is fucking deadly now, the range on it is way better.

The sensor fuzed weapon support bends over armour and does horrible horrible things to it.

And yes, the scout copter doing terminal guidance for hellfires is great too.


I love this mod. Plus it has the best trailer for anything game related recently.

It's hilarious that this mod manages to make misdirection so important just as a result of the power of information and its effects in game than RUSE does with gameplay specifically designed around "misdirection".

If they increased the map size then i'll totally play it. It was cool back when it was initially released but it was badly hampered by WiC's vanilla maps which were clearly too tiny for the size of the mod.

I think some of the maps included in the mod are larger than vanilla ones.

Hey ando, what sort of lag is there for cross-oceanic games? If it's bearable, we should totally get a game set up sometime.

Dammit, I lost my WiC CD :( . Does the mod change enough to make it worth rebuying? I think there was an expansion somewhere, and it looks like you can get both for a small sum.

Also, how does the mod work in multiplayer? Are there enough people playing this mod?

The US has a dedicated 120mm anti chopper round and inside 2km it would be point and shoot death for a chopper... so that really isn't out of reason. Hovering tactics aren't the best but they happen in real life too.

Damn impressive mod; the way I wanted the game in the first place. I am very pleased to see they even came up with a way to dig in your armor even if it does require using a shell instead of a bulldozer to make the hole.

So far i've only been able to play it against bots, but what's there is really sound. Obviously things are unfinished, but you can see what they're going for in the basic design and it's all really well thought out. I particularly like the inclusion of ATGMs for infantry now. As well as radar and ECM systems for AA.

They've added maps about double the size too, but single radars still cover much of a map. Using terrain is important for choppers.

Some of the things in the mod still seem pretty awkward. (ATGMs don't actually have a model for the launcher, cruise missiles crash into the ground then miraculously rise like a phoenix to smite the enemy, helicopters often look like they're resting on the ground in many places) But hey the mod is unfinished, and it features some pretty drastic rewrites of the gameplay right down the engine. Too bad I can't seem to find many people playing it.

Why do the choppers fly so goddamn high? It's annoying having to babysit them by ordering only tiny jumps.

Hold shift. Short distances between waypoint moves means they fly NotE. And thus aren't PATRIOT fodder.

Some vehicles like tanks can only be killed by top down attacks if you can't use a Hellfire or TOW. I've rarely found use for it though since the huge range an AA network has makes close in rocketspam attacks of the kind used in vanilla WiC suicide.

Defensive Heavy Attack choppers for the US are great as they default attack with hellfires, but you you cannot do the non-LOS launch with them.

Does the mod change how many forces are under your command, or does each player still control roughly the same number of troops/vehicles?


Also is infantry still semi-potent against air? Seems like a huuuuge amount of focus is on choppers and AA.

Infantry was always good vs air (indeed, probably one of the most effective in many ways) but they're less important since medium AA doesn't suck anymore and there are long-range AA options worth shit.

In regular mode you still have the same 6000 points worth of units. 'Few player' mode has always existed for 1v1 or 2v2 with a proportional number of points.

Stinger teams can't form the backbone a team's AA defenses but they make an excellent auxiliary. Choppers can pretty easily avoid the missiles they fire and they have limited range. So surprise attacks and covered placement are all the more important. Personally I tend to go with anti tank teams more in this mod, since the ATGM ability FINALLY gives my infantry the vengeance they have long desired against armour. Try running over my men now bitches!
