America had a powerful imaging of being the land of opportunity between 1945 and 1965 when so much of Eurasian industry had been dislocated if not outright destroyed by WWII, with the popular perception of America's industries and middle-class being much more developed in comparison to Europe and East Asia in the 1950s. But America has been in a long period of decline since the early to mid 1970s (Vietnam tarnishing the image of the US Military, industry hitting the buffers, Nixon, NASA starting to become irrelevant, and peak oil within America).
